I will NEVER buy a windows based laptop or pc again. Fact. At present I don't need more at home than my iPad and a mac mini hooked up to my main tv with a wireless trackball mouse in built (shame apple don't do one) and sofa surfing. I have retired my old pc and transferred all files to my macmini. Having recently expanded its ram and hd capacity to 1tb doubt I will ever now need an iMac, but when my daughter starts secondary school in the summer.....

Btw in respect of software there is something called parallels that I believe allows you to run windows on a mac, thereby most likely allowing some if not all of your previous sw to operate....though no doubt others with more knowledge will be along shortly to correct this. Good luck I think you are making a very wise decision.

Parrallels will let you run a virtual windows environment within OSX but that comes with its own issues as you have twice the operating system over head on the hard ware before you even start using an application.  You can also Boot camp into windows at start up on all Intel based Macs so an imac doesnt mean you need to be without windows, question is why bother when you bought a mac you might as well us native software it will just be better in 9 out of 10 situations.

That said, its truly dependent on the hardware you are running

My Mac Pro (Dual 2.8 Xeon Quad Core) runs two Windows 2008R2 servers as well as OS X....it does have 12GB of ram though  :signLOL:

Not to mention 8 cores, are they the nehalium xenon or the older type?  Either way its a monster what do you use it for....

Bit off topic mind not really helping JPC out with his software requirements.

Nice, does it also run an ETKA distro.

To be further off topic did you look up the speakers?

Mac minis are great little systems. They have really powered them up in the last few revisions - next time, its said to be i3 and i5 cores which will be rather interesting.

I use an MM in my bedroom as  HTPC! I built a custom PC not 18 months ago, decent spec i7 and all that and yeah it was great but still it run on Windows, as I have always been a mac fan boy I got the new MM and what an amazing difference, why I ever doubted myself and built the PC I will never know.

Love all the little available apps on the mac, all mac app designers seam to have an eye for such a great GUI, each little app I use, weather it be ripping Blu-Rays or coding it is just 100 steps ahead and all such small less CPU intensive programmes.

I currently own -

iPhone 4 (had each iPhone on launch day [/sad])
2006 MacBook Pro
2009 MacBook Air
MacMini
iPad 1

Will hopefully be getting an iPad 2 soon as well. Work on MacMini at work and they are fantastic! I am a part time graphic designer and the old Pro still handles CS5 easily and it isn't the most specced up mac either. Saying that I do have a good infrastructure of a network - perks of being a network administrator eh :P
