Mk5 GTI clutch travel
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:32:06 pm »
Hi, im just about to purchase a MK5 golf GTI but when i was test driving it the clutch biting point is over 2/3rds up the travel. The garage says its been in the workshop and its fine (volvo/bmw garage). I test drove a mates today and the biting point is about halfway up as expected.

So is there a problem with the clutch ? or is it normal. The car is a 57 plate with nearly 60k on the clock. Im thinking it might need a new clutch am i right ? or am i being over cautious

Mine has done just under 40k and the biting point is near the top. Wonder if anyone knows if it can be adjusted?

I believe the clutch is hydraulic and runs on the same header as the brakes as for bite points no idea I have DSG.

clutch is/should be self adjusting.
the pedal biting point varies a lot on various manual GTI's, its not really a reliable indication of its state tbh.
Just consider it in relevance to the cars previous owners and condition.
If you remap anyway theres a fair chance it will need a new one anyway, so budgeting for one would be very prudent.
