Edition 35?

Is it me or does a 35th anniversary celebratory edition sound a little odd? 25 yrs... 30 yrs all landmark years for lots of things, surely 40 yrs would be the next logical one...?

Its called marketing. Its sells cars. And it works. Ask Porsche...

Agreed. Being an ex-ad man myself I can appreciate the drive to squeeze out as many special/limited editions as possible. But surely at some point would there not be a danger of diluting the GTI Anniversary edition brand? I don't know if they exist as I'm a relative VW newcomer, but, if VW started producing anniversary editions from say the 5th yr onwards instead of from the 25th... would we really be that bothered by them now? Can it affect the cache of our cars in the future?

The 20th was the first Anniversary edition, though maybe VW would like to forget that model as it was a mk3 Golf! It was actually quite a nice car spec wise unlike the standard mk3 GTI. And it offered no power advantages over the standard GTI.
We didn't get many other special editions in the UK but in mainland Europe there have been plenty of special edition GTIs over the years, especially with the mk2 Golf and it doesn't seem to have diluted the cache of the GTI brand at all considering the Golf GTI has been going for nearly 35 years - how many other 70s and 80s hot hatch icons still have a direct ancestor today? Give VW the chance to get the thing into production before you judge it, just think of it as a run out model for the mk6.

I think every ten years is enough for an anniversary edition - it maintains the uniqueness of it.

S'all bollix anyway, we didn't get the GTI in right hand drive until 1979, so this is the Edition 32!

I've spent all day at the NLC (national learning centre) today doing some training and have had a chat about this car and the equipment it holds, im not a lover of the MK6 golf at all so it doesn't do much for me but I must admit it's the best looking MK6 I've seen for a while

To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original hot hatch, Volkswagen has announced the first details of the latest special edition Golf GTI model – the Golf GTI Edition 35.  With an increase in power of 25 PS over the ‘standard’ car, the Edition 35 develops 235 PS and is the most powerful production Golf GTI to date.

Since the debut of the first Golf GTI in 1976, the iconic model has enjoyed an uninterrupted history of success which now spans 35 years.  During this time, the GTI has become a car with cult appeal as well as an independent brand and milestone GTI anniversaries have been celebrated with exclusive special models, and Volkswagen continues this tradition with the Edition 35.

In addition to the increase in power, the Edition 35 combines classic GTI design elements with features specially created for this latest anniversary model.

A revised front bumper is joined by lightweight 18-inch alloy wheels while, in the cabin, the golf ball gearknob makes a return.  To mark out this special edition further, the ‘35’ signature appears on the front wings, sill plates, head restraints and on the centre panel of the seats.

This latest anniversary model will make its world debut at the legendary GTI event at Wörthersee in Austria at the beginning of June.

The Golf GTI Edition 35 will open for order in the UK later this year.  Prices and full UK specification will be announced in due course.
