Update for anyone interested... VW have agreed to replace the mechatronic unit after me going on about it being a common issue.  I have been told they take around 10 days to arrive - supplied to order and chassis no.

Does anyone know what changes were made to the later mechatronic units, and is it a relatively straight forward remove/fit job as I don't have that much confidence in the VW technicians?

VW should be ok, won't be the first time they have fitted one.......................
Quite - I think they are quite well versed with it all by now

Some very valid points guys... how long does the warranty last, and idea on the latest revision number for the mechatronic unit?

If the car is within the standard VW warranty period (3 yr/60k) parts will only be warrantied until the expiration of the warranty period, which in my mind is a joke - VW MK and good use of the goodwill tariff can help mind. If it is paid for then all genuine VW parts, fitted by dealers are covered for 2 years from date of install.

Had my car in at the dealers - diagnosed as the Mechatronic unit .... as expected.

To cut a long story short - put the claim through to Warranty Direct who have declined it, due to the unit not failing completely!  There is no fault code shown for this fault, but they have have been sent a Technical Bulletin from VW that details it - and the symptoms.

I'm not happy at all ... and am really going to go to town on the Warranty Direct company - I've technically been mis-sold a Warranty!

Have any of you guys experienced the same problem with Warranty Direct? ...

Hi bigkenny1781, sounds like the mechatronic unit buddy.  I would take it to the dealership straight away if its still under warranty.

Im 99.9% certain that Britishlion got his Mechatronic unit replaced and covered by Warranty Direct.

Which level of warranty did you ask for as they do various levels of cover iirc and you need the top level i think for this to be covered.

I got the best cover that they did - but the problem is that it doesn't show a fault on the diagnostic report and without this they are not willing to cover it! ... even though I had documentation from Volkswagen about the fault.
