Can you get heat soak with a stage1 map??
« on: April 08, 2011, 08:59:33 pm »
Just wondering cause I just took my car out after not driving it for a week, and it felt a little sluggish : /

Maybe as the weather is getting warmer that has an effect on performance.
Admin notice, sig pic removed for being to big.

Answer to your question is yes.

you'll suffer heat soak even in standard guise.

larger intercooler will help, but only to a certain degree

Heat soak is when engine components such as intercoolers/intakes get too hot.

Am I correct in thinking this doesn't happen to the R32? N/A engines in general?

Ahh ok. Are turbos less effective in warm weather?

yes.  my stage 1 struggled in the summer.  youshould log the Intake air temperatures (IATs) on your car on a full wide open throttle run (WOT) from 2-6k.  my IATs rocketed from 32degrees to in the 50s, and took an age to cool down.

Tuners tend to say for every degree rise in your IATs you could lose 1hp.  not sure how accurate it is, but it would make sense i guess

Unless you are running an unsheilded open cone, you really dont have too much to worry about, espeically on a turbo car with an IC to help with charge temps. Heat soak is really an issue for N/A cars when every degree of charge temps helps. An open-cone on an R32 would have it bogging down and struggling at low RPM.

At speed, it becomes less of an issue as cooling is for more efficient and air is being delivered through the intake at higher pressure.
Only 250.1bhp - but with that noise, who cares?

the TFSI engine does suffer with heat soak when using the stock IC, even more so when tuned.  Until you see the logs of how much the IATs rise, and then compare it to that of a car with an uprated IC then you will see the difference.

I logged mine stage 2+ vRS(stock IC) and mikes stage 2+ cupra (apr IC) his stayed pretty much at the ambient temperature and any rise in temp recovered very very quickly.  mine rose about 20degrees and took ages to return to ambient.  these cars need an IC when tuned IMO.
