Why does the MK5 have less power than its rivals?
« on: April 11, 2011, 05:11:23 pm »
everytime I am on the motorway I always see someone in another hot hatch or similar and it got me thinking which of these cars my car could beat in a race. Anyway I had a look online and it seems most of the other cars seem to have more power, for example the Focus ST 225 bhp, S3 265 BHP. If either of these cars were tuned then they would from what I have read hammer a modified MK5, excluding the ed30. So my question is why have VW only given the MK5 200BHP?? I am not bashing the MK5 in anyway as I do like my car but was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this.

Just because other hatch's have more power doesn't always mean quicker. The Golf has proved to be quicker round the track than rival cars that have more bhp.

Speaking to a guy with an Astra VXR last night.

He's been through 3 turbo's in less than a year and a half...

My mate has a vxr, had a go in it and it torque steers like a pig.

He drove my standard mk5 and says he made the wrong decision  :signLOL:

It's not all about headline power

The mk5 can actually use the power. Was behind a vxr nurburg ring edition which i was gaining on despite him having the extra power, i can only guess he could not get enough grip for te power or his traction control was holding him off.
Did sound good though  :ashamed:

We had a forum trip the same time that happened.  I remember seeing the Astra on the back of the truck driving through Adenau, not a pretty sight!

Look at the bright side, all the cars mentioned in this thread lose half there value on every year change  :signLOL: :signLOL:

Despite having a stage 1 map available to upload to my car, I've been running it as standard over the past 9 months as it all just feels right  - my previous car was a 310bhp scooby, so I do like my power, but whilst the stage 1 is sweet, I find the standard power keeps me more than happy. Wonderfully balanced machine.

Also take in to consideration just because a car i.e. astra vxr has 240bhp this doesnt make it any quicker than a car with 200bhp. 240bhp is peak performance and may tail of quickly to say 190bhp. And vice versa gti may peak at 200bhp but hold power around 200bhp for alot longer. I think bhp are pub talk and the real truth is on the road as there are some old school civics with not much power but are very quick because they hold there power alot longer than most other cars(when in vtech).

.
If the Golf GTI has less power than its rivals it's because Volkswagen design and build it as a great allrounder. The 5-door version in particular truly is a great allrounder and far more so than most of its rivals - The Audi S3 Sportback, another car from the VAG stable, is perhaps the only one which competes (The RS3 is another ball game!). Volkswagen have shown many times that they're not really interested in trying to outperform Fords, Vauxhalls, and Renaults etc - They don't need to.

Interesting points everyone, Scotsman how did you find the Subaru in comparison to the GTI?

VTECs- I thought these engines were revoluntionary but recently have heard mixed things- anyone care to elaborate the issue with them?
