Cam belt replacement

Hi, im new to the site and to GTI's. ive just this weekend bought a 56 GOLF GTI 2LT 3dr which has done 90k i got it for £7k which i though was a good price, seen has it has had 10 services at vw dealers with stamps etc. sat nav, 6 cd changer loads of kit really. and ive got to say im in love with it. its amazing. but anyway more to the point im thinking of getting the cambelt changed due to the high mileage, i was wondering if anyone knows roughly how much i should be paying for this to be done. any advice would be appreciated

Hi,

VW quoted me £319 for the cambelt change alone. For £399 they will also change the water pump at the same time. Not bad with parts and labour warranty that i think they offer?
Was told that the water pump change is normally completed at the same time cos of where it is and as its driven by the belt??????

The cambelt should have being done at 60k so you still have 30k to go before needing another. And with that miles it should have a few years left on it to.

I've just checked the service book and it says the cam belt and tensioners where checked at 60k so maybe I will be ok upto 120k, the book does only say is it to be replaced at 120k so might aswell just leave it I suppose if anything does happen their service data does say 120 so maybe I would have a case for warranty?

There was an update to the requirement and the new mileage is lower.

They've told me 60k or 4 years......whichever is sooner!

I got mine done at 50k miles, so IF it was done at 60k miles then i would do at 110k miles, it is such a critical item (new engine if it fails) then why take the risk?

Phone around different dealers, I got mine with pump and rollers done for £350 but was quoted £330 without pump at same garage at a different dealer £300 for no pump and £399 incl of pump, all at main dealers, actually both garages owned by inchcape and within 30 miles of each other!!! the £350 incl pump garage actually only charged me £340 "we did it a bit quicker than we thought Sir" how good was that :) never had that before. I definitely ring around then see what I can do like you say new engine if it fails so not worth the risk! Thanks guys

You english people should be happy about your cheap service costs. Here in Sweden we pay around 10.000 swedish crowns for a cambelt and waterpump change, which is about 985 pounds 

And VW Sweden says 5 years or 74k miles on the cambelt.

If you are fairly confident with working on engines, you could change it yourself. I changed mine with genuine OE parts for £159 and about 6 hours work.  Saved me quite a bit in money.  Its not that difficult a job but more time consuming.

I think id probably fook it right up to be honest the most i could probably do is change brake pads, and that took me a couple of hours. thanks anyway
