Nothing wrong with stopping quicker  :happy2:, i found the standard brakes on the edition 30 a bit poor if i am honest.

Exactly right. If it's only been driven on the road, then it's only going to need standard brakes. The car hasn't been made any heavier, so it doesn't need improved brakes to slow down from a maximum 70(ish) mph, does it? It just get there a lot quicker!

They should have left the 288's on

As a wise man once told me it's better to have more brakes than you need than need more brakes than you have.

I only had a lowly 270bhp but was still glad I went with a set of R32 fronts.

Ok by the same school of thought why map a car if you only intend to do 70mph.

If all you ever do is 70mph maximum then 100hp is more than adequate and so are the standard brakes.  :popcornsoda:

  too true

x3

With a mapped car (never mind one with 360bhp) corners will come at you a lot faster than in a standard car even if you remain within the speed limits. I honestly think that 312mm on that level of power is borderline suicide.

I'm surprised how people go on about the standard brakes on our cars. There not that bad.

If all you ever do is 70mph maximum then 100hp is more than adequate and so are the standard brakes.  :popcornsoda:

I completely disagree. From the second day after buying my car, I found the brakes to be inadequate.

At anything below 50mph, they're fine. Nowt special but adequate. IMO, above 50mph, they are crap. They're okay for "gentle braking" but not as good if you need to stamp on them.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I have a standard GTI and find the brakes ok but if I remapped then I would definitely wanted up rated brakes as the standard setup would not be sufficient with any more power.

VW wouldn't design and sell a car that couldn't stop from its maximum speed and as we're not legally allowed to do even half of it in the UK the GTI's brakes are more than up to the job.

As for the point of remaps, there are other aspects to performance beside top speed, acceleration and overtaking ability are merely 2.

I still maintain that a 300bhp Golf only driven on the road doesn't require better brakes than a 200bhp one. It isn't any heavier and it shouldn't be going any faster. Same weight, same speed, same brakes!

Says the man in the R32 with better brakes from the factory despite only having 250PS.  :indifferent:

I used to have that same view point. Then I found a set of R32 fronts at a cheap price so took the plunge. I am definately glad I did. They are a far better braking system than the standard setup. Can be a bit snatchy at low speeds but I found altering my braking style alleviated that somewhat.

You can map a car for many different reasons. But the main reason is to make your car faster. The standard brakes are and will always be fine for road use and it's pretty much impossible to drive to the point where the brakes are fading on the road. You have got to presume your brakes were in good working order or coarse to say they were not up to the job? I.e free and not worn out, fresh brake fluid?

IMO I think alot of people's argument for saying they are not good enough comes down to experience and just wanting the best you can get for your car before you have reached the limits of the standard car.

On a recent track day iv just being on the brakes never let me down and yes they did get abit spongey but let's face it I was flat out giveing them so much more hammer than I could ever achieve safely on the road.

I'm not saying upgrading is pointless because I know how much of a difference it makes but for road use it's pointless IMO.

Yes you can use that argument but what if skinny b'stard is driving the .:R and me and 4 mates are in the GTI (I'm not skinny by any stretch of your imagination ).

In your opinion of course.

Did someone forget to take out the shipping spacers or is he trying to be an offroader? look at that gap between the arch and the tyre!
