Hi all and R.I.P my GTI!
« on: April 13, 2011, 03:58:27 pm »
Hi Everyone, greetings from Sarf London!
Like a lot of people I've been reading the forum for a long time and built up a better knowledge of the cars. The recent death of my pride and joy and prompted me to finally sign up to this great site. Probably as part of my grieving process! Lol

I bought a gorgeous Tornado Red GTI 55 plate with sunroof, leather, winter pack and only 18k on the clock last summer. A month ago, a looney smashed into the back of my car, which twisted the chassis and has now been written off. To say I'm gutted is putting it mildly. I've had many many cars over the years from Escort RS 2000s, harriers, to a lot of BMWs. And I can honestly say my GTI was the best car I ever had.

Just waiting for my pay out now and getting back on the road... funny thing is, I read the site even more now! Lol

Cheers

You wouldn't want my leathers after what I've been up to in them! Ha ha

Definitely going to get another GTI. Just debating whether to go with another GTI which you can get for a good price with high spec, or go with my impulse and plump out another 1.5k for an Ed30 with low'ish spec.

I don't plan to remap whatever I get. I did find that my old GTI seemed to run out of puff a bit higher in the range. Ironically I bought a rev d dv a few weeks before her demise which is still sitting on my table.
From reading the forum, the eddie will def rev better higher in the rev range but I certainly wouldn't want to lose anything low end.

I had my heart set on getting another manual as the horror stories of the dsg's going wrong terrify me. Currently driving a BMW auto and the delay in kickdown drives me mad!

High spec GTI or lower spec ed30 for 1.5 - 2k more???

Cheers Keano, ideally I'd love a tornado red one like yours, and if the gods were looking down on me... one with a sunroof too  :innocent:

Do you have to rev the nuts out of it to go anywhere?

Red ED30's are the way forward....though I may be a little biased!

Have you still got the car? Could sell some of the parts off it to fund mods for the new one

Unfortunately not, it was well and truly knackered and had to be lifted straight to the insurance's salvage yard  :sad1:

Is there much of a delay in the kickdown when the dsg is in normal auto mode?

Almost none. The DSG is very clever and when you put your foot down, boy does it go.

Hmmm that's thrown the cat amongst the pigeons. Just got to consider possible reliability of them.
I get the feeling this site is going to cost me money! Ha ha

thanks for your input Alex  :happy2:
