Rust - Rear Quarter
« on: April 16, 2011, 10:09:29 pm »
Giving the GTI a detail today, claying the rear quarter and found a small bubbling of the paint in the middle of the lower section (below the bump strip).

I have a paint thickness guage so know the area has not been painted.

Intend to contact my local dealer to arrange an inspection under the 12 year anti corrosion warranty.

Any recommendations before I call them on Monday or members with corrosion in this location?

Unfortunately car does not have full VAG history, last 3 specialists.

Cheers

Simon

When I had an issue on the Rear wheel arch my dealer bodyshop didn't even enquire about the service history of the vehicle.

Hope you get it sorted!

Yeh it took a couple of weeks for VW to get back to my dealers body shop but they agreed it was warranty work thankfully.

There is a thread on rust on the front wheel arches which might be worth a read as well http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,21537.0.html

Theo did you take any pics of your rust?

Just been to Abridge VW and the guy suggested VW may reject my claim as the three sports on the panel all look like stone chips

All 3 of mine are bubbles which I dont think would be the result of stone chips?

My bodyshop manager came out and photographed my car. It was literally microscopic bubbling and imperfections under the paint over an area approx 10mm long. There was still paint over the top of the rust.

Polished the drivers side and have the same bubbling on that rear lower quarter, coincidence? I dont think so!

Will wait for VW's answer to the other side  :fighting:

Chased VW dealer and they now want "more images", basically they have done nothing  :fighting:

Here are my images, 1st is drivers side second passenger, both in same location.

Abridge VW suggest these are stone chip damage (car is a 2007), any thoughts as to whether this is likely?

2nd pic does look like a stone impact imo, 1st pic is difficult to work out where the photo is aimed at?

Right in the middle of the pic for the 1st one, just above the side skirt.

Is it normal for a stone chip to rust like that on a can thats 4 years old?

If the impact is deep enough, and not been touched up to prevent rust appearing, then yes its possible...

But you are not the only one to complain with rust issues, which have been pointed at the inner arch liner rubbing away at the underside of the wing, rubbing away the paint . Looks like a design fault from what ive read here and other forums.

I've read loads of threads on the arch rust, not seen any on the rears that could cause this damage though?

If I could even get a contribution from VW I would be grateful.

From what ive read, vw have made some contributions so far, but not a full 100% on cars that pass 5 years old..

Also full vehicle servicing history at a VW dealership, also may help you cause.

Good luck :happy2:

I have an identical rust spot like that on mine and from the picture it appears to be in the same place too. However mine is a three door. There ain't no chip though. In all honesty I thought it was a mark caused from being sprayed but its getting bigger.

Whilst your looking, check your arches and rear badge too!
