One of my ex's had a Beetle and honest to god it had the worst driver perception I had ever seen, the wing mirrors were to small and the rear view mirror was positioned wrong ! you were almost blind on what was coming from behind !

Onto this one it looks a bit Chrysler ish! but i like it.

I think

Not as bad as the last one. With that one they reskinned a Golf and made a stoopider looking, less practical car. At least with the new model I can state that they've reskinned a Scirocco to make a car that is merely an equal to its forebear when it comes to a lack of practicality and good looks!

Bizarrely I quite like it. Will reserve judgement until I see it in the flesh though.

Some lovely detailing there, and equally as nice, I think, as it's rivals from Alfa, Mini etc. I've still got feeling that VW are going to have to get their marketing spot on to sell it though.

And yes, I can see it costing an absolute fortune!

Subject to seeing in the flesh, I've just fallen in love!

5-cyl 2.5 litre turbo engine?  The same as the RS3 and TTRS?

Soooo much better looking than the Scirocco imo and funkier than the Audi TT. This Beetle would modify beautifully, both in performance and cosmetically.

DSG option?

Hmm, it appears the 2.5 litre option isn't turbo'd  :sad1:

The 2.5L 5cyl is a very old unit which is for the US market only, I suspect because in the US people want displacement over modern, smaller charged-air engines. It's got very little in common with the 5-cylinder units in the TT-RS and the RS3 (which, bizarrely, trace their lineage to Volvo/Ford - think Focus ST - but Volvo/Ford themselves acquired the technology from the original Audi Ur-Quattro 5-cyl) and is a relatively unsophisticated and fuel-hungry engine which is why it's not offered in Europe. It was also offered in the Mk5 Golf.

....Then I've fallen out of love and lust even before our first date.

This Beetle would have really been something with that turbo'd RS3/TTRS engine. But not the sort of car VW ever seem to offer. Okay with our GTI engine though.

Well I imagine we'll get it with the usual range of EA888 1.4/1.6/2.0TSI engines we've come to love (and I'd guess the 2.0TDI as well). Apparently (according to an Autoblog ticker I just read) a Beetle R is confirmed too, and that's almost certainly going to have the 2.0 TFSI EA113 out of the Scirocco/Golf R I'd guess.

Although older, isn't the EA113 reputed to be 'stronger' than the EA888?

That's why EA113 is in all the R/S four cylinder lineup. I suspect EA888 could be made as strong but would require some development effort (and $$$) and for "halo" models of what are essentially cheap cars* which are increasingly difficult to sell it's probably not worth the expenditure.

*cheap compared to the £80k+ you'd be spending on a Carrera or up.
