RNS-510 - iPod Connection
« on: April 19, 2011, 02:04:59 pm »
Hi Guys,

I have just bought a 2008/08 Mk5 Golf 1.4TSi GT with a DSG gearbox, I have come from a EP3 Civic Type-R and looking for a knowledgeable place to find out some interesting information. I am keen to carry out a few modifications to the car over the next few months including an AMD remap and lowing the car slightly so although it isn't a GTI I will of course keep you posted.

Anyway first up I believe I have what is know as the RNS-510 Sat Nat System, please see a picture below:

The problem I have is that my Gen2 iPod touch doesn't seem to work in the docking station under the armrest, when I insert the devise into the cradle is says on the iPod that the unit will not charge which isn't the end of the world but via the touch screen audio command system I cannot find the iPod listed anyway to play from.

Is it worth worrying about or should I go for the MDI kit?

Thanks for your help,

Nick

The old ipod docks wont charge newer ipods, in the past apple used to support firewire and USB charging on there products and then dropped firewire at some point each used a different pin and voltage, so you wont get your ipod to charge.

As for using the ipod the dock you have emulates a cd changer so you will access it via the CD button which migth need pressing twice (once internal twice external) and you will then see the first 5 playlists on your ipod listed as CD's in the changer and cd6 as 99 random songs.

If you want full ipod control then MDI is the way to go but you will need to run a new cable between the head unit and the arm rest.  Personally I just made use of the SD card slot and internal HDD in the RNS unit.

To Come...NQSBBK, highline CCM.

Hi Rich,

Thank you for explaining how it works, it was really starting to wind me up. Anyway, I have ordered a decent size SD to use with the built in HD as you recommended as that has to be the best option for the money.

Smashing forum guys, looking forward to using it in the future.

If when you get the SD card it comes up with an error you might need to do a firmware update on the RNS unit as earlier firmware could only cope with SD not SDHC cards.  If thats the case do a search on the forum as firmware has been covered lots of times, also worth looking at my-gti.com lots of good info on there.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for that information, I have got the car booked in for a full service next Wednesday and a friend of mine who works for Audi advised I should say that the RNS is running a little bit slowly when leaving the keys at service reception. Standard pratice would be to upload the latest firmware upon to the unit, is this advisable or should I tackle this one on my own.

Regards
Nick

Personally, Id just flash it to Firmware 2760 off your own back. Its dead easy to do, and takes an hour after you have put the disc in and started it

Hi Guys,

Could somebody please confirm what format the Music Files need to be in to upload on to the RNS - 510, I have just copied over so of my iTunes library to an SD Card which is MP4/ACC Audio and the unit does not recognize this.

I presume the files needs to be MP3 can somebody confirm, I have just managed to update the firmware as mentioned. Nearly there............

Youll need to have them in MP3 format (VBR or CBR) in order for them to work

M4A/AAC etc are not recognised.

When I was using an SD card, I copied the songs out of itunes, into a folder then imported them on another PC and converted them to MP3 using iTunes on the PC
