Air con a bit rubbish (warranty?)
« on: April 20, 2011, 07:21:23 pm »
After things going scorchio I tried the aircon on LO for the first time since buying the car in Dec last year. It's not broken but it's not effective at all. Doesn't get very cold but does bring the temp down. The car still has warranty but i'm guessing they won't deal with it under warranty as it's not bust, just crap (i've had a enough cars to know this)/ Prolly should have checked it out sooner but it was so cold when i bought it I could never see things getting warm!

I thought it would have been regassed by VW when I purchased it...Should I take it to em or to an aircon guy to get sorted?

As I said, it is sort of working..just nowhere near optimally.

What year is the car? On average you loose 10% of the gas in the air con system in 1 year, i get mine serviced this time every year, it's not a warranty repair as the compresser is functioning it's just not doing a great job wich normally means it needs to be re gassed,
At the moment we are offering a full air con service including a refresh (air con bomb) for £79 all Inc
Hope that helps

It's 2008. Like you say, it is working but pretty poorly. Prolly would have felt like the D's B's if i' tried it in December...

It is more than likely the air con compressor !

They go all the time in Golf's and ARE covered under warranty !

Just take the car back, explain the problem and they will repair ! I paid for mine and it was £400.

That's not true mate, when the air con works but not as effective it's genrally down to poor gas level in the compressor, if the compressor isn't switching on then you get pretty much 0 cold air, but the op said his does work but not as effective.

When I bought mine I took a chance as the A/C wasn't working there wasn't any gas in at all , gave it a regas and found the pressure switch to be leaking very badly, replaced switch and regassed again all ok , I was lucky it may be something that simple

Just sounds like the refrigerant gas is low. Get an air-con service guy to check your system, you'll most likely find that after checking the system for leaks, you'll need a top up, then you'll be frosty again

If the compressor was stuffed, you'd get no cooling effect at all.

Do you guys recommend going to an aircon specialist, or just the stealers?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

To be honest I don't really like quick fit but they do a really good air con job, and not at a bad price!

I wouldn't pay stealer's rates for this. Plenty of competent a/c places out there.

However, the selling dealer is liable for defects for the first six months after purchase. The law states that such defects were likely to have existed at the time of sale & therefore liability is on them. I'd also point out that (if you got it from a VW dealer) their "120 point check" or somesuch cr*p that they always claim used cars get, wasn't thorough enough. I really think that a case of polite but firm could get them to gas up your a/c without charging you.

Man, if I'd paid for a car from a dealer that had crap a/c, it would go straight back.

Thanks for the advice. It was VW I bought it from so it still has balance of VW warranty and the approved used warranty kicks in after that.

I bought my 08 ed30 after selling my 06 gti and this was one of my main issues. The cooling on the newer cars is just not as good as the older cars. I know they changed the type of pump they used. My brother is an audi tech so I had him to regas it. He found there was already enough refrigerant in there. Refilled it anyway and no difference. My brother did say that they'd had a technical bulletin to say that the cooling on newer cars wasn't as efficient as the older cars.
Don't get me wrong here , it gets cold but it's as if it struggles to sustain low temps.
