changing dsg gearknob, gaiter & surround
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:17:58 pm »
hi guys,

ive got a new gearknob which comes as a one piece unit with the gaiter, silver gear selector and black plastic surround. ive given the old one a tug and it comes off, then ive disconnected the  connector clip which i assume tells the car which gear im in but then i get completely flummoxed  :chicken:

anyone done this and know how to remove the gearknob so that the new one can go on?

thanks,

So youve lifted up the base, disconnected the plug and now want to remove the gearknob from the selector shaft yes?

Youll need to release the clip that clamps it onto the shaft. Lift the gaiter up over the top and you should see it

As above, you might also need to pull the trigger out too, ps dont push the trigger in when its off or you need to dismantle the knob to fix it.

This is the clip to give you an idea

A great little mod!

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

Help! Reactivating this thread as I'm stuck doing just this. I'm putting this exact gear knob on my mk5. Problem is, the mk5 "button" you press to change gear seems to work from left to right, whereas the mk6 one goes front to back. When I tried to put the gear lever on, it just never lines up and I can't get it to a place where the little switch inside the gear lever will "hit" the green notch inside the dsg assembly in the right way to make the gear change.

Help?
