OEM brake fluid
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:07:45 am »
Tried the search but not conclusive, so:-
What brand/spec of brake fluid does VWMD currently use and what quantity is required?
Not bothered about race/track fluid.
Thanks

Call trade parts specialists (tps) that is local to you

They will give you the most unto date VAG approved stuff ,

From memory I think it cost me £8 ! Might of been less though

Thanks chaps.  :happy2:

So do TPS supply one "bottle" to do one change and what volume is required?

It comes by the litre, and that should be enough for a change. I changed mine recently, and it was more than enough

If you use one of the one-man bleeding kits then I suggest you get 2 litres.

Just on this topic how important is the recommended brake fluid change?
Mine has yet to be changed and the brakes still feel good.

Very important.

Should be done every two years without fail

Brake fluid over time absorbs moisture and its compression ability reduces, meaning your brakes are slower and less firmly applied

VW charged me £65 to do this, didn't know the fluid was only £8. WTF, how hard is it to change?

Thanks again. Vw Preston are doing my 3 year service and mot in a couple of weeks. My car also needs it's first brake fluid change and they've quoted £59 hence the desire to have done elsewhere at a reasonable cost!

IMO once you have bought the fluid (Circa £10) and changed for £30-£40 labour (half hour at cheapest rate £60-80 Independent labour) I would just let VW do it.

It will be on the invoice, chances are properly done using a vacuum bleeder ( ie drawing the fluid through), you might save £10 getting it done elsewhere.

What is a £10?  Spend the £ and get it done with the service IMO.

Very important.

Should be done every two years without fail

Brake fluid over time absorbs moisture and its compression ability reduces, meaning your brakes are slower and less firmly applied

More importantly with heavy braking the trapped moisture in the fluid starts to boil leading to spongy brakes with loss of efficiency.
