Richwig....why do you say that about a 50mm lens...........it used to be in the old days of 35mm film slr's but surely it must be now nearer 35mm unless you have a full frame dslr ? Comments?

50mm 1.8 are usually very cheap especially the canon variant, and they are way way sharper that most zooms. I think that you learn so much by shooting with a prime lens, they make you think more about framing rather than just standing wherever you want and twisting the zoom. Also, they have the obvious aperture advantage so will help you out with low light shooting and are fantastic to learn about DOF and its effects.

I see what you mean because the 50mm on a crop is quite tight, but for the money and what it will teach you, IMO they are worth getting straight away.

50mm + CP filter and your laughing  :happy2:

My 50mm was somewhat expensive, but it is a Nikkor lens as opposed to some cheap rubbish  :signLOL:

They are a great lens, and you can get some fantastic shots from having a 1.8 aperture. DOF is great fun at that level

180ish is still cheap for a lens with that level of clarity.  :happy2:

Canon/Nikon both top notch like a Rolls and a Bentley, some will prefer one, others another but in the real world the difference between the two is minimal. I couldnt agree more about a 50mm, it should be your first lens and with f1.8 the depth of field will be terrific. You can get a good 50mm for less than €200 and worth every penny (or centimo......). I have a Canon 20D which i use for F1 pictures coupled with a Sigma 400mm, i am sure we have some F1 fans on here so please feel free to have a look on my website - http://www.flickr.com/photos/udaltea/sets/ (Mods - hope this is ok to put this in?) and enjoy the photos at the Essen show from a couple of weeks ago. The pictures at Essen i took with a Panasonic Lumix compact and is great camera, enjoy!

Nah, I disagree. On a Nikon crop sensor (DX) first lens in my mind should be the 35mm F1.8. Gives a better "standard" field of view than the 50mm with will act as 75mm on DX.

Now if you have full frame like my...cough cough...Nikon D3 and D3S, then the 50mm F1.4 is a cracking lens.

Super photography Alex and really subtle processing. Prefer Lightroom 3 and PS CS5 personally, as it suits my workflow better.

D3 is next on my list, but the D80 does what I need for now

I tried lightroom but wasnt keen on its interface - i guess it just what you are used to

I do use PS CS5 though  :happy2:

You use what works best for you Alex  :happy2:

One thing about going full frame which is quite often overlooked (apart from the amazing high ISO performance), is the amazingly shallow depth of field (much less than a crop sensor). So using something like my 85mm F1.4 or 70-200VR results in superb subject isolation at wide apertures and lovely bokeh. Just need to be spot on with your focussing though.
