where to get an rns510
« on: April 26, 2011, 03:36:48 pm »
Would you even consider buying from the bay...there are numerous lithuanian sellers, to be fair to them they seem to have ok reputations.....

also, will version B work in my 2005 (55), MY 06 GTI with no battery drain...I cant really be arsed changing the canbus.

I currently have a factory MFD2, which i would sell on.

Cheers guys that offers me some comfort.....if any one else can comment on the battery drain issue for me that would be cool.

2005 (55) MY 06, with an RNS 510 revision B.

If I upgrade the can bus, I take it I can get the most recent version C and then also I would benefit from full postcode searching too?

Have I started something  :signLOL:

A version B will exhibit the same problems if you upgrade the firmware to the newer (unless you use a modded firmware though these dont always work), so in either case, youd need a new can gateway to support the full features without battery drain

I'm after a C version.........the LED version screen (is that right)
1. what does upgarding the firmware do and can you get away with not upgrading it ?
2. when you get the newest maps already loaded on the harddrive can you recover them later if there is a problem with the harddrive. Most RNS510's come without the disc
3. what firmware of a C Version will not give the battery drain issue....i have a Canbus K version....can you downgrade the firmware to this and what effect could it have?

Sorry to hijack your thread but may be some answers to some questions you may have had :innocent:

1. upgrading the firmware fixes bugs, improves functionaility and overall stability
2. no - you need the maps on a disc to copy them back on in case of failure
3. all Version C will often give battery drain as they come from factory with 2660 which started it all off. A K gateway (providing its a later one) will have no problems. Cs are not downgradeable below 2660.

Downgrading the firmware can lead to instability, loss of functionality etc

You also need the latest firmware to get the latest features in the maps, such as speed limits, further POIs etc.

Darren doesnt do them anymore, I had this issue when I spoke to him. If you pop over to R32OC and have a look in their for sale forum you will find a thread from a chap called N13 KKF who supplies RNS 510's either a B version or the new C LED. I got mine from him and can vouch for it!

except i would need a canbus update...I did notice on the r32oc site that there is a suggestion of a kufatec loom that costs about £50 and obviates the need for the canbus update. I am doing some other long await mods soon therefore I am probably going to put the RNS purchase on hold for now.
