Burnout before going up a drag strip
« on: March 09, 2009, 11:35:15 am »
Obviously, I know how to do a burnout, but are there any particularly good techniques to do this, or am I over-analysing the whole concept...!

Does it not ruin my clutch though?? Or other engine parts for that matter?

Please advise...

I don't. How do I burnout in a manual?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

I don't. How do I burnout in a manual?

Handbrake on, throttle on, dump the clutch. spin the wheels on the spot to warm them up.

OK, so my question is, if the clutch is released, i.e. i am not slipping it, can it still ruin the clutch!!?  :scared:

No.. So long as you break traction right away then your clutch will be fine.. Light them up! Worth it for the 60ft times..

on road tyres, i wouldn't even bother.

you'll likely to overheat them and the tread blocks will start to melt.

its not like hoosier / mickey t drag slicks, that need heat into them to make them sticky!!!

but if you really do want to do a burnout, handbrake on (FWD car), 4krpm or more, dump the clutch and hope nothing breaks/snaps!!!

The guys in the minis do them in do burnouts in 2nd gear. Not sure why, they just drop the clutch at high rpm. Heres a quick vid

i think that is one very well modified mini!!!

sub 12 sec 1/4 mile is bloody fast for FWD. i reckon it was running drag slicks too.

It runs around 260 bhp and a a 70 shot of nitrous. Its also heavily stripped. The guy is a good mate of mine, drops his kids off at school in that too
He is a mini specialist and has built some of the quickest minis in the uk :happy2:

OK not owning a GTI but.......... shouldn't you guys be switching your traction control off here??????

ESP

I launch mine (albeit mainly a 4 wheel diagonal drift) by losing the ESP, being in second at 6Krpm and then just dump the clutch quickly, then keep the revs out of the limiter and hold the accelerator steady and away you go till you hit the glue. 2nd gear to take some of the strain off the engine, the moment your into the glue come off the accelerator and get the clutch back in.

To be honest though, racing on a glued track with road tyres doesn't really need you to do a rolling burnout as your tyres wont utilise the heat in that way unless your almost slick
