Front Windscreen replacement?
« on: May 03, 2011, 11:53:20 am »
I have a few nasty chips on my screen. Think they have been filled, but look unsightly. Question is, if I have a new screen, how good are Autoglass etc. at putting the rain/light sensor back on? Does it still retain it's original 'look'?
I wouldn't want the effectiveness of the sensors being blighted by a dodgy refitting job? I have visions of clear selant just 'sticking' it back to a new screen and it not quite fitting etc!

Any thought would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Im considering having mine replaced due to scratches... driving me mad, does the screen have to be damaged before an insurance company will replace it???

Had mine changed last week by autoglass as it was cracked. The sensor bracket is pre stuck to the glass. With the internal sensor on a sticky pad. 9/10 they have to change the pad because it gets damaged. If they do come to do it request that they bring a replacement pad. They don't carry these and he had to come back a couple of days later to fix it! Other than that a good service.

Sorry but that's crap. Had my screen done twice by AG and both times the guy knew how to pop the housing for the rain/dusk sensor. As long as AG bring the right screen for your car, it comes with a bracket already stuck to the glass and all the AG guy does is pop the sensor and housing back on to it. If it comes without the bracket he's got the wrong screen!!!

Edit: maybe not crap but they never had to change the sticky pad on the sensor both times for me.

Had my windscreen replaced by autoglass about a yeaar ago. the rain and light sensor looks perfect, cannot tell the glass has ever been replaced and still all works perfectly. as long as they know its got the sensors should be no problem at all.

Thanks guys  - that's all helpful.
My screen may encounter a little gentle persuasion, to get past the 'repairable' state then.

Thanks muchly.

I don't think you need to damage it mate as long as it has chips in it and you tell them to replace
it they should do it i've just had mine done by national windscreens because it was scratched
and they did the back one as well both upgraded to tinted for the princely sum of £70  :drinking:
