Revo'd; misfire; fixed
« on: April 29, 2011, 10:17:30 pm »
Hello, 1st post. Had my Ed30 for 2 weeks. Always planning to get a re-map, but the current Revo offer brought that forward... Had Revo Stage 1 done at VAG Technik in Henley on Weds.  Very good initially, but quickly developed a misfire on full throttle across the rev range, with exhaust warning light flashing.  A quick scan of this & other forums and I feared the worst...

Back to VAG Technik first thing on Thurs and a test drive confirmed the misfire but no fault codes showing.  Sean at VAG Technik suspected fuel pump issue and offered to take the car in next week for a new fuel filter & fuel pump follower at no cost.  I mention this because his approach was brilliant throughout and he clearly wanted to get the car running right, even though the problem could have been unrelated to the re-map.  Full marks and highly recommended as a result.

I agreed and Sean put the car back to the stock map in the meantime.  But on the drive home, it was still misfiring on the stock map.  Straight back to VAG Technik and Sean dropped everything to check for fault codes again.  This time it showed a dud coil pack on cylinder 3.  New coil pack fitted within an hour and problem solved.  Simple.

So, conclusions:

1-  VAG Technik in Henley are highly recommended
2-  There can be a simple explanation for misfire problems after re-map ...
3-  ... But these don't necessarily show up initially on diagnostics

And a question:

-   Any recommendations for  tyres for a Stage 1 remap (car came with Avon ZZ3s, which I'll be changing).  While wheel spinning in 3rd is quite entertaining, I'd like a bit more grip.

Rob

Good write up! Hopefully having my ed30 done next week, so will bear in mind... How's it feeling with the new map!? Assume you've had it put back on ;-)

Yep - back on the Revo map.  It really transforms the car and makes it properly urgent from the mid rev range.  But you can still potter around if you want to in the lower revs.  To be honest, I was expecting to run the car stock for a few months to get used to it before getting the re-map, but I'm actually very happy the Revo offer meant I did it sooner.  Hope you enjoy it when you get it done.

P.S. And my misfire experience confirmed my choice of Revo over Superchips: while I'm sure most people don't have any problems with the "plug'n'play" Bluefin approach, I wanted to have the back up of a local specialist in case things didn't quite go to plan ...

whilst stickier tyres will be good get the WALK fitted with either full set of engine mounts or if cant afford go for the ECS dogbone insert for time being with WALK - will cure the wheel hop and traction control far less keen - mine still torque steers like mad though other cures for that!

Near Reading - about 10 miles from VAG Tech.
