Fitting MK5 GTi Valance with standard GT TDi Exhaust
« on: May 06, 2011, 09:32:22 am »
So i've just bought my first Golf.

Its a 2004 GT TDi so doesn't have the fancy exhaust the newer ones have.

The rear valance is currently sprayed 'Tornado Red' which I don't really like.

I'm wondering how stupid it would look to swap it for a GTi valance and then upgrade the exhaust in a few months time when I can afford to do it properly.

I know the existing exhaust would not stick out at all but will it line up with the cut out?

Thanks in advance.

Martin

Hi Martin
I'm in the process of changing mine I've got a 170gt, I'm putting on a gti colour coded lower part.
If your interested I'll have a spare lower part that will be coming off it has the cut outs as well, I will also have mud flaps to go with it too!
Let me know

Why not get the valance (about £45 from the dealers) then save up enough money to do the lot at the same time?! When you have the exhaust, fit the valance and exhaust the same day?!

Saves you running round with a cut out for an exhaust but no exhaust for a couple of months

I know waiting is the sensible thing to do, and I may well do that.  I just really don't like the painted valance I currently have.

sf1506 - Whereabouts are you?  Is the 170 valance the textured like the GTi?

Thanks

Martin

you can buy a backbox off ebay for about £50, then the GTI valance for £45. very cheap mod really.
Then upgrade to a Milltek at a later date if you wanted.

I'm a bit reluctant to spend £400 on a Milltek system as i've just swapped my Impreza WRX to get the Golf to save money.

I'm thinking rather than a second hand exhaust trying something like this:

Gives me a good look and hopefully won't break the bank.

Am I correct in thinking that the 170 valance is not the same as the GTi one?

Thanks

Yes it's the same as the red one you have but it's got the cut outs.

Save your money and buy an old one, bit of autosol, wire wool and elbow grease will get a decent one looking as good as the one you posted for only about £30. Or if you bought the tips off eBay they are only about £50, so an all around saving. The one you posted will not give any power/or sound gains over what you have now.

Big Al,

Thanks for the advice.  I'm not really after any power gains and not sure what sounds gains are available for a diesel.

Think I will keep my eye on eBay for a cheapo exhaust.

Looking for a GTi or GT TDi 170 Backbox Exhaust if anyone has one for sale.

I'm in the Manchester area and would prefer to collect for cash.

Also in Wrexham/Chester on weekends.

Thanks

The GTi backbox is not a direct fit on a 140, its needs a little playing around with to get it on, also I believe that not all 170 tips are chrome.

Here's my 140 with a GTi box

Still trying to source a backbox.

Here's mine so far without one.
