Problems with my Edition 30 - what to do?
« on: May 06, 2011, 01:12:14 pm »
Okay, so I finally got rid of my cursed Megane on Tuesday (part ex'd it for £8750!) and got an 07 Golf Edition 30 for £14k.

About an hour after collecting it, I noticed a loud whirring noise coming from the engine bay, which changed depending on engine speed (imagine the noise of a piece of wood stuck in your wheels and it hitting them as you move).  5 minutes later the engine management light comes on.  Obviously I drove it cautiously home, but on the way, something else happened leaving my car sounding like a tractor, with absolutely no power and unable to rev beyond 3k or so.

In short, the Golf has since been to a diagnostic place for two days, who couldn't identify a problem, so now it's off to an engine specialist to have the engine stripped.  They are refusing to send it to my local VW dealer or a VW specialist.

What would you do, and where do I stand on this legally if I want a refund or different car?  I have obviously paid to have insurance changed over, tax for the car etc etc, so what would happen to these costs?

I'm massively deflated and am ill to boot, alongside a mountain of personal problems - not a great week for me.

Cheers,
Russ.

They couldn't find a fault through VCDS (or any other diagnostic software) but they're going the strip the engine anyway?  :stupid:

I dont know where you legally stand, but I'd personally bite the bullet and take it to a VAG specialist, then try and claim back any funds through the garage that the car was purchased from as they clearly don't have a clue what they are doing with it.
If you have to ask why, you'll never understand.

This is my thought exactly but the car is barely driveable and the best specialist near to me is a good 15 miles away or so.

I think the issue lies with the diagnostic company not having a clue, or appropriate software.  It could be a silly issue.  Should I approach the diagnostic company and ask them what software they have used?

Walsall, West Mids.  The car is in Bilston!

Do people on here have scanners then?  Can I buy one from eBay?

Man with Flat bed's are normally £2 a mile, would be better to get them to take it to a VAG specialists/dealer!

Car is obviously not fit for its purpose so personally I'd be wanting a refund...

Not had a good chance to see exactly which links from this page will shed some light on your scenario but there is some good info here - http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_world/consumer_affairs/buying_second_hand_vehicles.htm

I would going back demanding a full refund and walk away from the car having had it as per Bacillus's post.

Walsall, West Mids.  The car is in Bilston!
Singh123 is based in Wolves. You can always PM him given that he's close to you.

Midland VW (independent) are based in Cannock, so not too far from you.

Alternatively, I'm based in Brum and don't mind coming up to give the car a VCDS scan. May or may not know much about the results but we can post up the scan result and see if others have an idea. If I'd seen this before I left work, I could have come round as I had to head over to West Brom earlier this afternoon.

I am keen to get it over to Jody at MVW but he's rammed until Tuesday unfortunately.

All I'm after is somebody who is free tomorrow morning to get the fault codes off, so that I can see if there really is anything there or not.  I think the garage is open from 9-1 tomorrow.

Are you free at all?  I'd really, really appreciate it, and would obviously sort you out with some beer tokens for your trouble, or maybe detail your car for free or whatever you want.  I'm desperate before they start doing something they don't need to

I have to be back in Brum by around 0830 tomorrow morning. So if you want, I can get to yours for 0730, get the car scanned, save the error codes, clear any faults and see what happens.

Let me know if you're interested and PM me your address.

Ah okay. I thought you had the car into the garage by 9am.

In that case, I'll see if I can make it there tomorrow. I'm supposed to spend time with the family as well as take my sister's car for an MOT which makes it difficult. Are they going to start work on the car on Saturday or are they going to wait until Monday?
