Welcome to give my canon 550D a go at the ring Mr P.

Really want to pick something up before we go. Been to Jessops and had a feel of a few. They recommended the Nikon D3100 or Canon 1100D as good starting points.

What budget you looking at spending Steve?

Around £500-£600 Dom  :happy2:

Within that price bracket I would be going for the Nikon D3100, though bare in mind that this is a medium to long term investment. If you start investing in lenses then you'll be anting to keep that same fitment on other bodies in the future.

Yep looking at it as an investment.

What lens would you recommend for motorsport?

For motorsport it very much depends on where you are shooting from, whether you have passes, or inpublic spectator areas. The Nikon 18-220 VR II is a cracking lens - http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_18-200_3p5-5p6_vr_afs_n15/ Shop around and you can get this for about £470. Sigma also do a very nice 100-300mm F4 lens, which obviously has a better working range for motorsport, can be a little soft when wide open but for this you're looking at approx double the money of the Nikon lens I mentioned. For movies and Canon you need the 60D, the HD video on my 55od is very difficult to use meaningfully, because of the fixed screen. The 60D has the rotating screen which makes all aspects of photography much easier especially with live view.
As Dom says for motorsport you need at very least something like 70-200 and even that will be quite limiting, 100-300 or 100-400 gives you much better composition without cropping.  :happy2:

Grab QD's camera on the way to the ring and try and shoot a video, you will see what i mean about it being difficult.  :happy2:

I don't think a 5D is within budget somehow.  :rolleye:

Rather than Jessops give these guys a visit.
