To Buy Or Not To Buy
« on: May 09, 2011, 10:10:16 pm »
Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a Golf GTi and have been looking a this one recently with intention to go and view it hopefully this week or weekend.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201117385583075/sort/priceasc/usedcars/quantity-of-doors/3/price-from/7000/price-to/10000/engine-size-cars/2l_to_2-5l/fuel-type/petrol/transmission/manual/model/golf/make/volkswagen/radius/1501/page/6/postcode/tn91xd?logcode=p

Now i have spoken to the guy that owns it and he sounds genuine and said that the main service has just been done and cost him about £250. Im sure if this was the cambelt + water pump change wouldnt this be a bit more expansive?..

Just wanted a few of you to take a look at it and see what yo uthink. I believe it has had 4/5 previous owners and as the ad states, only one key...Would this put any of you off?.. This made me a bit wary so thought i would ask for some opinions. Oh and it is HPI clear too as i have had it checked...

All your views would be great!  :happy2:

Thanks
Adam

Personally I think you'll easily find a cleaner, lower mileage car for that amount of money.

£9,150 Negotiable.

Gotta be worth a punt if it checks out ok when you get there and it's what you like.

Go low and hopefully meet at a point which is comfortable to you, maybe £8500 ish.

What's wrong with only one key?

Looks OK to me Adam, and i write as someone who has just bought a 2005 GTi with only the one key! The only thing that disappoints me is that when a buyer cant be bothered to put decent (non blurred) photos up it just smacks of carelessness but thats the perfectionist in me i guess. Colour looks great, its HPI clear i would make a move, its a buyers market out there so go in low and you should be OK. You are right about the cambelt/water pump change, i doubt it has been done for that price, i have just had mine done by an indie here in Spain and it was €360 so a stealer would be more, use this to your advantage as a leverage. Good luck and let us know how it goes

Mine only came with one key but I've got different plates on the car now so no one will be able to find it.. but the spare key I bought through the dealer wasn't cheap

Thats true, but looks alot more suspect someone staring at the vin in the windscreen trying to match numbers rather than plates.. but saying that if they have the spare key all they have to do is push the button lol

Find a cherished example for that money, one that has everything including keys looked after so it's all complete.

It's all a little irrelevant, you can 'delete' keys using VCDS so there could be 60 spare keys for your car in circulation but they won't do them much good.

This.

Also one key wouldn't put me off, all you need to do is buy a flip key from eBay - some come with a blank transponder for free (£15) get the blade cut (£10) and then get it programmed to your car and get the other keys deleted.

Im pretty sure VW will code the other key for way less than £100 if you have the rest of the stuff already done.

The car looks a decent spec for a very decent price, MFSW & RNS-510 would be your first upgrade though! :) Don't hang around these forums much, as we'll have you spending all your money on mods!

Looks a nice motor.

One word of warning - if the private plate is not included in the sale, the owner will need to transfer the plate and send off the V5 form to the DVLA. This will mean that you will have to wait for the revised V5 to be returned to the owner before buying, or trust him to fill out the change of ownership section post sale.
