Well the golf is fixed finally

Yesterday saw an end to another turbo, just joined the M621 from the inner ring road in Leeds (nr the Porsche garage) got upto the 70mph Pop, Bang, load of smoke, car still running but no power, something went under the car, oil all over the boot.

Turned off  at Elland road nr VW Leeds and stopped car, massive oil slick in road,  The car was recovered to VW but they have just come back with an initial quote of £1600 so told them not to touch it and the car has already been recovered to my local indy who is going to have a look and see if an hybrid is an option.

There was no warning signs, no noises nothing it just went pop?? also there was no tell tail owl/police siren type noise the only problem I had was it was getting hard to start on a morning but I was putting it down to the EGR cooler.

O well looks like Ill be keeping this car after all, with the addition of an Hybrid turbo :happy2:

Gutted to hear this mate. What all modifications did you have on your car. I've just picked up a stock 140 GTTDI and looking to remap it. Thing is I have a fairly noticeable whistle siren already!  :sad1: Hope you get it sorted alright.

very strange to have 3 turbos die, points to an underlying fault. I would send the turbo (or whats left of it) to a specialist to inspect it before refitting another.

sorry to ehar darren, you havnt had much luck with the turbos at all,

hope hybrid is an option for you, ive got a mate running a bigger turbo on one of these and hes running around 300 bhp

the cloud of smoke he leaves behind when he boots it is unreal

I'm glad you looked in mate, I'm going to up date this thread has often has poss so ill see if you can help me a bit,  The only problem I had was a few month ago I had a small coolant loss but it stopped, then say 3 weeks ago it started playing up when trying to start it, took about 30-40 seconds to start (load of white smoke out the back once started) then it would stutter for a couple of second then it was fine for the rest of the day.

I've spoken to the guy doing it now at SAC in the kippax area of Leeds, usually deals with cossies, subarus and high end audi's(rs4-6) and he has said he getting onto it asap, he's already recovered it from VW 30 minutes after I called him.

So looks like once he has inspected it hopefully go down the hybrid route and see if that last another 2 year.

Ive will be spending too much to sell now so will be keeping it.

Sorry to hear this Darren, hope you get a permanent fix without too much cost. At least it sounds like the fella you're going with has genuine interest. I'll follow this thread as I do all your others.

Hm....i dont know much about remapping but theres a lot less things tuners can play with on a diesel engine like yours (and mine). My understanding is because of that the fueling and boost are the only things that are changed, hence pushing it with the small turbos?

I dunno....but nearly every diesel car ive heard awesome map, they pop a turbo! lol

Sounds like its in good hands. I had one in recently that had a failed turbo, was replaced by a branch of Nationwide autocentre but turbo failed after 3 weeks but they wouln't touch it for some reason. When I looked at it the reason for failure was clear, the turbo oil feed pipe had been twisted near the oil feed union during fitting. Its common practice to fit a replacement oil feed pipe with a new turbo on these but many people dont bother. Also ster clear of 'reconditioned' tubos, most are weakened during the recoditioning process, wont go into detail but shafts are often smaller on a recon turbo. Look at the Turbo Dynamics stg2 Hybrid, I have ran these with 260+bhp and 380+ft/lb with no reliability issues.

I cant see the map being at fault, as all SC stuff is generic so generally quite a soft map.

Cheers PDT can you tell me what I would need to change in a general round about way regards the hybrid...I'm not after massive power gains I just want it to last,

Also the last turbo which was fitted on the 29-04-2009 was brand new from TPS so shouldn't have been recond?

Are you sure you couldn't stand the thought of all the vultures that were circling for bits off your car when you said you were thinking of selling, and sabotaged it (only kidding)   :evilgrin:

With the hybrid change all gaskets (intake/exhaust/oil in and out of turbo) and the oil feed pipe.  :happy2:
