£550?!! Where the hell does that figure come from? It is expensive at around £440, but not that much. Is the number 4 key broken on your keyboard, George?

The R32 and the GTI are 2 very different beasts and I think a lot of people go into owning the former thinking it's going to be better/faster than a turbo car and then start whinging when they don't get that thump in the back you get when a turbo car comes on boost. The R is a different experience altogether and what you do get is smooth linear performance that has less drama, but is by no means slow. I think you're either an R32 lover or a GTI lover and that the argument as to which is best will rage on forever!

I personally love the lack of drama you get with a big chested naturally aspirated engine and wouldn't swap mine for 10 GTIs. Go and try a few and see how you get on, but if an extra 70p a day on car tax puts you off before you start maybe you're looking at the wrong car?

No need for the aggresive reply, I was doing it from memory, even at £440 it's still horrific.

And giving the tax figure as a pence per day figure is daft, everything sounds cheap when it's divided by 365...

Drive both buddy, but for me an ED30 is a no brainer

The 1'32.62 that the ED30 did was done under damp conditions IIRC from the Top Gear magazine. On a dry track you could knock the 2" off easily.

I too love the R32 and I still like the V6 growl.

 George posted earlier about the pro's and cons and I can only agree with them, although you need to add the benefit of all weather grip for the R32 - particularly in these last few winters we've had

Personally, given the same choice over again I would still choose the ED30 over the R32 if you are going to tune it.

No aggression intended, bud. I merely broke down the extra VED into a daily figure (it's actually only 54p or the price of a Mars Bar) to demonstrate what a small difference there really is. You do still have to pay £245 on a GTI remember!

Tax for the R32 is now £460.00.

When I got it MOTed last week the manager said I'd won the prize for the most expensive car TAX he'd seen.

He said it was mad to be on emissions as when it came off the gas tester he said just more output than a fart there son :)

@gulfstream. i have had my R32 for about 2 and a bit month's now and im thrilled to bits with it. if i was you, i would test em both.
if you do decide to go for an R32, get a black one, its defo the fastest colour.

Mine's only band L for some reason. Maybe the DVLA think it has a DSG gayerbox?

Altough due to me doing a silly amount of miles my Mk5 R32 has now gone and has been replaced by a Mk5 Gt TDI Sport
