Ok.Time is moving on,rozzers say the chance of finding the GTI is diminishing fast so thoughts are now turning to a new car.

I,m looking at ED30's and R32's..The new S3 is not an option now,(wife glared at me).

I've noticed this car on R32OC.

I recognise the name for some reason,Wellsy,and wondered if anybody on here knows the car.If the members of that forum are as dedicated to the cars as you guys are here then I'm a happy camper.

Insurance say its a 7-10 day wait for the claim process to begin so I dont want to waste the guys time by joining the forum and posting my interest I just wondered if any of mk5golfgti know the car.

Gutted to hear bout your car...The R32 in the link looks a good example and well maintained,you would of thought it would have had high line display  with the leather but not a main issue thou

Mine also had full leather but not highline computer.

If I was you, I'd stay away from a R32 and buy an Edition 30, I wish I had!

Is it performance related or just the day to day running costs that made you wish you went the ED30 route.

I didn't do enough mileage to notice the low MPG, but the TAX was £550 for 12 months (I believe a few early MK5 models will be in the older / lower tax bracket), mine was also coming up to needing a service which again was circa £500.

The main reason I disliked it was due to the lack of power, my friend bought a 2005 Leon Cupra R around about the same time, and we had a 30mph rolling start race up to 130mph (on my private runway) and his car managed to get a car length on me in standard form. I also don't think it performs well enough to warrant the four wheel drive system.

Pros:
Prestige looks
Amazing sound track, even with the OEM exhaust

Cons (compared to an ED30)
Lower MPG
Heavy 4wd system
Heavy engine
High Tax Bracket
High Servicing costs
Less Torque
Slower

Thanks for the advice George.I,m looking at both the R and ED30's.My mileage is 14miles a day so like you said that is,nt the issue but that TAX is making me cringe.

Yea it's terrible. In my opinion R32s come into their own on the track, on the Top Gear test track the MK5 R32 achieved a time of 1:30:4, below show's it standings on the board with the other cars listed at 1 second either side of 1:30:4

Looks like he's a well known chap on there, I bought my MKV blind from a forum member - you just get a feel for people and their honesty.

Horrible to say, but it's probably for the best it doesn't have Recaros either, more of a target for the scum.

£550?!! Where the hell does that figure come from? It is expensive at around £440, but not that much. Is the number 4 key broken on your keyboard, George?

The R32 and the GTI are 2 very different beasts and I think a lot of people go into owning the former thinking it's going to be better/faster than a turbo car and then start whinging when they don't get that thump in the back you get when a turbo car comes on boost. The R is a different experience altogether and what you do get is smooth linear performance that has less drama, but is by no means slow. I think you're either an R32 lover or a GTI lover and that the argument as to which is best will rage on forever!

I personally love the lack of drama you get with a big chested naturally aspirated engine and wouldn't swap mine for 10 GTIs. Go and try a few and see how you get on, but if an extra 70p a day on car tax puts you off before you start maybe you're looking at the wrong car?

Gulf the R32 you linked to is a very basic spec car, I think for the money you could defo get an higher spec car with around the same mileage and age?

Have you not though of an S4 or maybe even the E46 M3 or our you a true to live VW nut like most of us on here good luck with the hunt mate and I hope you find the right one.

hahah yea you tell him, i love my r32 too, not bothered bought how fast it is or that gtis are faster etc etc, the r32 mated to an dsg box makes the car IMO. love the low down torque and quick gear changes oh and the exhaust with the flapper mod,
