Its odd, when i had the choice of the R32 and the ED30 i went for the ed30, but with these two i would much rather have the R

I did the same and would agree re this as well ....

For me the 35  is the one. Get close to £40k and a world of options open up. The GTi is's a great £20k somethih car it's no £30k+ car

Have a read about the BMW1M M3 suspension and brakes (360mm F) 10 and 9 inch lightweight 19's rwd with a clever LSD way better weight distribution and chassis a 6 cyl 3.0 litre twin turbo and properly sorted by BMW M department. Plus it sounds great out if the box

Scirocco R if I wanted to spend £30k something and keep the VW badge

My 135i is a staggeringly good bit of kit out of the box, proper Cayman S pace - obviously lacks the delicacy and feel of Pork (what has it?), but adds 2 more seats and stage 1 380BHP potential in a sublimely balanced chassis.

I've yet to get behind the wheel of a 1M, but if it's my car dialled up to 11, then it'll be superb.

As has been said, a Golf always will be at its best as a £25k hot hatch, straying too far up the price range puts it in a league it can't and shouldn't compete in.

I would have bought a Golf R ... but ended up with a 330d coupe.

The price was about the same as the Golf but the build quality is in a different league ... which is a shame.  I wanted a Golf R but it just isn't worth the money they are asking.  It needs to be at least 5K cheaper ...

hurdy if you were to buy the ed35, you would of course map it and then it wouldnt be any different to the ed30 then, at least with the Golf R your getting something abit different

A lot of peeps are whinging about the price of the R, but I bet the 35 is getting for 30 grand with a few choice options. The standard GTI's list price is nigh on £25K for a 3 door manual, so a 5 door DSG 35 will be a lot more than that.

According to the "Konfigurator" on the German site, the ED35 is 3,150 euro's more than the stock GTI (approx £2,750).

Now nearly everyone would have the 18" Monza's and leather, which are £2,335, so you are basically talking £400 for the extra detailing and the more powerful engine.

However, I bet you could get around £2k to £3k off a normal GTI and what is betting VW play the old "no discount on the ED35" card!!!
Golf R gone.

They said they wouldn't discount the ED30 - half an hour had 10% off the price when I looked all those years ago. Dealers would be idiotic not to negotiate, as the next dealer will.

Good point well made though, Hurdy, the extra spec will be more than the extra cost.

A GTI with 18s and full leather would have nicer wheels and seats and still be cheaper, though!

From what I've read the E888 seems pretty tunable, so the extra 25 horsies is hardly an issue, is it?

I still think a more door 35 with the bafflingly popular auto box will be north of 30 grand and there's some seriously nice used cars available for that sort of dosh. No way would I spend that on a FWD hatch.

On a  slightly different note but on the subject of silly prices I've just 'built' a 1.4 TSi S-Tronic A1 with a few nice options but it comes out at £28k!!!

£28 large for a mini hatchback  :stupid:  That sort of dollar would buy you a pretty decent used S3, and not a very old one at that.

I think 8-10% discount might be a little ambitious

RNS for £500 is ok but it wouldn't be brand new and wouldn't include the roof mount GPS and cabling and of course it wouldn't carry the 3 year warranty.  I agree though £2k is a lot, does that include anything else such as DAB as I'm sure the RNS is less than that on the MK6 etc.

Pointless poll anyway. I get the impression the decision has already been made, the way the 35 gets defended against any other suggestion!

Huh?

The R is in front on the poll by a mile and there's a good spread of pros & cons.

Flick the chip off your shoulder.
