Steel Grey Vinyl Wrap
« on: January 10, 2011, 01:54:49 pm »
Got my hands on some vinyl wrap which was a free-be but unfortunately it's too light to match the the Steel grey of my GTI.

It's to wrap the rear boot badge background, i.e. the black plastic section that sits behind the silver badge. I'm going for a black VW badge on grey background look once all done.

Where could I get hold of some wrap that would be a close colour match to Steel Grey?

Thanks.
Pete

Why not remove the whole rear mech and paint it the correct colour?
TR dsg, stage 1 r-tec map, bbs ch in gloss black, black roof and badges, colour coded, neuspeed hybrid intake, cat back exhaust..

Can't justify the time & costs of painting it tbh.

If I can find the right wrap, I can do it myself whereas painting I couldn't.
I'll take it off properly anyway by removing the mechanism, as Big Al kindly explained in another thread for me  :happy2:

Any one who sells vinyl wrap and has a puter can print off there own design onto vinyl, so i would guess they can match your colour exactly.  :happy2:

An old one indeed but this has escalated from an idea to a requirement.

Which sites are tried and tested for this and what would I need to provide, simply my paint code? I only need a 300mm x 300mm piece.
Thanks  :happy2:

You will struggle to print a colour that matches a car colour. It's not just the colour, the flake makes up your perception of the colour too. You might just get lucky that one vinyl manufacturer makes a film that's similar. My suggestion would be to paint it to be honest pete ;)

Your theory is accurate Jay - I guess I can't argue with a paint match  :happy2:

I dont really know why your even contemplating wrapping that bit. Spraying it is the only way to do that IMO, because if you don't get a good colour match it will just look like  total bodge!  :happy2:

I felt it was do-able Rich and I'm one of the least practical people on the forum

Jay and yourself are spot on though in that a paint match is easier to come by for a better finish.
I asked the question as I felt if I had the right colour vinyl wrap I could cheat and fill in the bits around the VW badge, which wouldn't give a bad finish if I took my time and did it neatly.

However, as you've highlighted, the colour match is what it's all about.

I've got a cheeky streak of confidence after managing to do an adequate carbon wrap job on the boot VW emblem

Isn't the area you intend to wrap rough plastic? If so vinyl won't bond too well

Yes... textured plastic!

I don't know if we're talking about the same part or whether I'm missing something?

It's the black section behind the silver VW badge. I've even applied some of the silver look wrap that I was given on there as a dry run. It held no problem, I just didn't cut it to shape/size because the colour match was sh1t.

It looks and feels fairly smooth. Put it like this, it's not the bobbled finish that the standard GTI skirts and bumper have which I wouldn't have queried because that would be a bad surface to try and wrap, whereas I don't believe this is.

It's not a perfect surface admittedly but it would hold, as tested.
The main curve ball is the small dotted holes where the badge attaches, hence why painting as you both suggested is the best option overall :happy2:
