.nrg are Nero files.

When you burn them use the slowest speed available x1 if possible.

Basically I just right clicked on the nrg file and burned to CDR by selecting send to CD drive.

Am I a plonker!?

Well, after a weekend of stress my columbus is working again and I now have a fully functioning MFSW. Thanks to everyone that gave advice and special thanks to Stu for his disc burning tips that got me there in the end!
