« on: May 09, 2011, 11:59:28 pm »
hi all i have been looking on and around this site for some time and eventually decided to post.  First i have an 07 plate edition 30, pearl black, i love the car to bits but this is the first service its due and i have been quoted £950.AAAAHHHHH!!!!  So i know its the major service so here's a list which i asked the stealer to price for me.....

mot
timing belt, tensioner and water pump.
full dsg service
brake fluid service/change
ac service plus pollen filter
fuel filter
full service, ie sparks air filter oil filter new oil etc
free coil pack due to "product enhancement"

now please help me make sense of this price or i might just have to get rid very shortly after the service.  Oh to make matters worse i reckon the front two tyres need replacing!!!!
comment welcome thanks for reading.

£54 mot
£399 timing belt, tensioner and water pump.

£60 brake fluid service/change
? ac service plus pollen filter
? fuel filter
£170 +90 for the plugs full service, ie sparks air filter oil filter new oil etc

thanks for the price breakdown i was totally panicked once they told me!! i just want the best for the car so im going for it.  They quoted me £75 for the ac service plus pollen filter so i guess once u add that in it doesn't seem so bad.  Oh and fuel filter quote was £20.

Search under fourth year servicing costs, they are high due to just about everything needing attention.

Think I paid about £800 and some tens.

All note if buying a GTI in it's 4th year, often part of the reason for trade/ sell.

I presume the quote was from a dealer? Im pretty certain you could get that whole lot done cheaper at a independent VW specialist.

Either get a quote from the specialist and go there OR get the quote and take it to the dealers to price match. Personally, i would take it the the specialist (previous bad experience at my local dealers), you may even be able to negotiate some discount as you are having all the jobs done at the same time. Once done, take your car to dealers to have coilpacks changed for free!

just my 2 pence...

Rich

edit: just read your bit about wanting whats best for your car - in that case, take it to the indy garage  :happy2:

I'm in the same predicament, just bought car fairly cheap knowing it was due a big service. My only concern about an independent garage is if they do all the updates that the ECU/DSG may need?

my advice:
mot: cheap as possible (doesnt matter where! i paid £39.95 last week at SEAT Dealer

Buy the following from the dealer and do it yourself: prices are a rough guide

Spark Plugs £50.00
Fuel Filter £25.00
Pollen Filter £17.00
Air Filter £15.00

Oil Change (£60.00 with all the bits) can be done DIY (ive done all on my driveway with limited tools) but you need a specialist oil filter tool..... you will need the cartridge, 5ltrs of VW oil and a new Sump Bolt as they come intergrated with a washer.

So service if you do at home with MOT is about £210.00 (without the DSG service) so ask what the individual charges are for DSG service and Cambelt (kit) replacement

Screen wash you can top up yourself.....just pay the Stealer for cambelt change, you should be getting the following:

1. Cambelt, x2 idlers, x1 top tensioner and the water pump....thats about £400 inc vat, parts and labour...VW are doing some promo on this at the mo so best to ask around on here or within the VW community for further details.

Coil Packs are the latest revisions and are FOC

Go to a specialist, im down south. Fontain in Iver Bucks have a great rep and really know their stuff with VW Audi group cars, and labour rates are about half that of a main stealer.

I have the service plan and questioned the fuel filter on my service last week and was told it was for diesel vehicles.

Phone around, I have three VW dealeras main franchises within 15 miles of me and for the cambelt and water pump etc they differed in price by £60, that over 15% or almost a £140 saving on your rack rate bill! I got my cambelt and water pump done for £340 all in incl parts, labour and VAT! the others wanted £400!!

Whereabouts are you? I am in Gloucestershire and can recommend a good (cheap) main dealer, some of them are pretty keen for workshop work at the moment!! Plus you get a VW invoice and stamp in your book which is worth something!
