Help with an air intake...please!?
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:19:53 pm »
Afternoon!

I'm new to this site after picking my 2007 GTi up, loving every minute of driving, cleaning, stroking it ;-)

Although on servicing it I got to the air filter stage and noticed the air intake (going up the left hand side of the engine, from the front of the car) was loose. I've now purchased the bracket to hold it secure but for the life of me, I can't work out where it should be mounted /secured.

Has anyone got a photo, or can direct me where the RHD version is situated? I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my VW (some call it anal), so not liking it loose behind the engine.

I've been on "other" forums and managed to find pictures of the engine bay, but all in LHD. Which have the pipe going into the bulkhead and take the place of the RHD wiper motor. All the RHD versions I've found on the net have got a induction system fitted, therefore this pipe is missing.

This is the LHD engine bay (pipe is on the left)

Thanks!!!

The picture youve put up is an ED30 so that pipe on the left side of the engine cover is the DV (Diverter Valve) relocation pipe as used on K04 cars to move the DV from on the turbo to a cooler location at the front of the engine.

Also LHD and RHD engine bays are the same from that view with the air intake on the right of the engine bay it is necessary due to the engine attitude which is completely un-related from the L or R HD of the car.
picture of a standard pirelli (hope jay doesnt mind me linking)

Its that pipe that I am talking about. It seems to go from the intercooler pipework (in front of the engine) to the back of the engine where it terminates in an intake. Mine disappears behind the air mass meter and pipework.......but isn't connected / secured to anything.

from your sign you have a standard GTI so K03 correct me if thats wrong.  which means some one will have done the DV location modification to your car so potentially its not a proper part but modified.  Pictures of what your talking about would help.  But if this is what happens then you will need to bodge a better fixing in place as it isnt standard fitment or move the DV back on to the Turbo and remove the piping.

I believe that European and us car came standard with this pipe fitted, It is commoly known as the 'noise pipe' , IT is not fitted to UK car due to them being RHD.

Read the description on the below link

Mmmmm  thats exactly what I've got....I've even been down the the local VW dealer and got a printout of the "noise pipe" hoses.....it was a standard part on my car with the chassis number in ETKA (VW Parts Catalogue), and its a UK vehicle.

Strangerer and strangerer.......

Is there a blank to remove this pipe.....if the link is correct and its just for "noise" then I can deal with not having it....but at present it will leave a hole in the intercooler system where the noise pipe meets the intercooler pipework.

Really loving this forum, everyone is particuarly helpfull!!!  :notworthy:

Never heard of that before hence thinking it was the DV relocation!  do you not have the charcoal canister then, missing from the picture you posted but can be seen as the rectangular black box in the one I posted.  Its part of the fuel vapor return system.  Is you car an import by any chance?

Yep, I have the charcoal cannister.......I actually broke the pipe to the charcoal cannister when trying to find the mounting lugs for the end of the noise pipe.....ARSE....as its £75+VAT....thats an expesive lean.....GRRRRRR  :ashamed:

This is the ETKA picture I got from the VW dealer.....shows the "noise pipe"......don't know if that will shed any further light on it....?

and I've check with the dealership and its definately a UK vehicle.....

I wonder if the previous owner has retro fitted it to add that extra noise??

Sound like the easiest way to sort your problem is to buy a uk spec intercooler to throttle body pipe. It does nothin but add a little more noise in the cabin and give the turbo a little bit more lag due to having a extra chamber to pressurise.
Many people on the US forums blank this of as a first mod.

Cool, sounds like that will be the plan....new intercooler intake will be the first mod, along with R32 rear end.

I've got the perfect excuse to spend some money on her....!! =)  :driver:

Ok, so this is what I've got fitted....definitely the "noise pipe" the yanks go on about.....

I've therefore ordered up the S3 intercooler pipe, as this cuts out attachment for the noise pipe. I've also ordered a Carbonio Intake and it'll make the engine bay a lot tidier.....now all I've got to do is trace where I'm loosing boost pressure from....I've got an air leak "pressure side" acording to the 5051d diagnosis machine....so when the pipe has arrived I'll get it up on a ramp and have a good look.
