Oil Usage
« on: May 27, 2011, 01:15:40 pm »
Ive got a 2008 GTi and ive noticed its using quite a bit of oil. It was quite low a few weeks ago so topped it up and checked it again yesterday and its about 4mm lower than it was then without the car getting driven very hard at all. The car seems to be running well and is pulling fine in all gears. Also noticed a small bit of emulsion under the oil filler cap but the car isnt running bad and isnt losing any water or pressurising the water system so presume the head gasket is ok

Anybody noticed this on their golf or has any ideas about why its chewing up oil?

Any help greatly appreciated

Gee

I believe VW say that 1 litre of oil per 10,000km is normal

Yup. Remember that's 600 miles!

TBH I wonder how much it's down to how the car is run in.

The white emulsion is from lots of short journeys and not fully getting the engine up to temperature leaving moisture condensating around the filler cap.  Looks a bit like this?

To get rid of the moisture, go for a decent (at least 30 mins) drive, with plenty of welly.

My 08 was using a litre every 2500 miles until it reached around 22k, since then it hasn't used a drop. I recall others with pretty much the same story. So it is possible that your oil consumption will reduce over time.

To echo the rest, as long as you use less than 1 litre per 600 miles, you're within tolerance. Plus the cheapest place I know for top up packs of Castrol Edge VW spec is Asda, £10 for 1 litre.

Do not wait for the oil pressure light to illuminate before checking your oil level as by that time you may already have incurred engine damage.

+1. I check my oil level at least on a biweekly basis if not weekly. Also a good opportunity to check everything including washer flui (I go through bottles of the stuff!).

To be fair there are two lights, oil level and oil pressure.  If its the oil pressure light then yeah you're in big trouble but when my oil level light comes on its pretty much always around the half way between the min and max marks.

Mk1 dipstick is still the best way though, just don't want to panic people!  :happy2:
