That's because the light is a 'you're about to do engine damage' light, not a 'top up your oil reminder' light. Dash lights are warnings that something's not right, the oil level may be well below minimum before the oil pressure light illuminates.

I've said on many occasions, if you top up the oil to the max mark the engine will burn it off until it finds a satisfactory level which is normally between the two marks.

Sounds good advice, can't easily over fill then?

Not true - there are two lights - oil pressure and oil level.  Certainly on my 05 plate.  If you check the manual it tells you.  A message also comes up in the MFD to say check level.  The message if the pressure is low is to stop engine. 

Agreed in principle you shouldn't rely on this but there are definitely two different warnings.
