Home network issues - 5 port switch and wireless router

Guys,

What started as a way of getting round a Xbox related issue has now become the bain of my life. Ever since buying Black Ops i have experienced issues playing with friends as my Nat type has always been Restricted. Having spent god knows how many evenings trying to find a workable setup for my wireless router i gave up and stopped playing the game. After 2 months i came to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that the simplest way of bypassing the router would be to use a 5 port switch.

The setup i am currently running - Cable modem into TL-SG1005D 5-port Gigabit switch - Xbox connected to switch by short run of ethernet cable
                                                                                                                                     - Cisco Wireless router connected to switch
                                                                                                                                     - iMac connected to switch by ethernet cable

Here is the problem. I can not get connectivity from the switch and Wireless router at the same time. I can get wireless to work, no issue but if i want to use the xbox i have to plug the modem directly into the xbox which is less than ideal.

Any thoughts?

Not sure why you had problems. If I see anything other than open I set the Xbox on a fixed IP address and apply the port forwarding rules from Xbox Live to that IP address.

To sort out the restricted NAT thing, all you need to do ideally is put your XBox on a static IP address then open a couple of ports on the routers firewall for the XBox and its unrestricted.
Lemme find the port numbers, one min

Ok, assign your XBox a static IP as per my last post. It needs to be static so the firewall rules always apply correctly.

Then on the router, open the following ports to the LAN IP you assigned the XBox..

Port 3074
Port 88
Port 53

Once you've done this, all should be well.

Can you get your Mac and Wireless working at the same time?

I'd be suprised if you can, as the modem isn't a DHCP server

I guess it also depends on what router you are running?

When I first started Xbox live about 3 (maybe more  ) or so years ago I bought a Belkin router that just wouldn't work. I exchanged it for a Linksys which allowed all the config changes necessary and that fixed it for me.

Currently using a BT Home Hub which is also good.

If the Cisco wireless router is really a router then you probably need to do this

cable modem --------> Cisco --------> 5-port switch --------> other devices

Would help to know what model the Cisco box is.

I'll check model it is later but i am sure it is the WRT620N wireless router.  I bought the switch to bypass the router to overcome the NAT issue but thinking about it the port would need to plug the switch into the router and not the other way round.

Finally sorted but i had to reflash the firmware first.
