TDI 140 just as fast as a GTI
« on: May 30, 2011, 06:14:08 pm »
I was on a private road with someone just going 0-60.
First person was a mk5 gti which i was neck and neck with.
Then another person who had an Remapped audi a3 2.0T 8p which is presumably the same engine which was neck and neck up to 60 again

My gt tdi is remapped too.. i was going to buy a gti for the speed but im not so sure now, i have full leathers, good mpg, heated seats, xenons and a full gti kit.

Am i missing something by not switching over
thanks

Are you sure they were racing you?

What is the 8p after audi a3 2.0T ??

Not sure about the unmapped GTi, but the mapped Audi 2.0T would definitely have munched you - if he knew how to drive

what happened after 60?!

To be fair, in the real world, I doubt there is really that much difference.  Dervs have a lot of torque to give good acceleration.  The GTI would have the legs on you though.

I once had a little fun with an S4 - and he won.  But up to around 70 I wasn't that far behind, certainly not as much as the BHP difference would make you think.  He had maybe a second on me at that point.  Then he disappeared ...  My point here is that a couple of seconds means something on a track but in the real world it doesn't make that much difference.

I think after 60 he would have taken over but I was surprised with the Audi. I had more torque at start and we were neck and neck, I think he was a few cm in front at 60. I was letting the revs all the way. Could be the driver like you said but I was surprised.

Youre right, on the road you can't tell much until the cara are on a track
Cheers

Ps 8p is the chassis type

My old Megane 150 DCI mapped to 190+BHP with 300+ lbs/ft,   that was a 7 second car 0-60.  That was the M9R 16v engine with vvt and piezo injection developed by Renault and Nissan.

I'd say on the road you will be able to tell the difference. Ok, perhaps no in out and out speed, but certainly in terms of drivability. A TDI driver is going to have to work very hard to keep up with a hard charging GTI. There is also the difference in the suspension to consider.

I had difficulty with a 2.0TDI a while back. I needed the higher rev ranges of a petrol engine.

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

As others have said in the real world 0-60 not much noticable difference.

Although you did say will you miss out if you keep the TDI over the GTI and my answer would be YES.

My TDI feels heavy and cumbersome compared to a GTI, nowhere near as nimble.

I had a mk5 GT TD140 mapped and it was poor in terms of feel compared to my mk5GTI, the mk 5 TDI really feels like it has a big cumbersome lump up front, and even mapped it felt not very exciting if I am honest, have just got a mk6 GTD and this is a different kettle of fish, lovely feel and feels quick even in std form, I had a mapped mkV PD150 which had pants handling but a very very quick engine remapped was the equal of a mapped 1.8T
