THS bottom engine mount
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:24:59 am »
Well I have it fitted.......

The good news :

Crisper gear change, a noticeable improvement in engine movement

The bad news :

A little more NVH into the shell, tolerable but I would prefer without. Feels a little 'bolted in' reminds me of more sporty, less sophiostciated cars. I will probably get used to it. But ......... the vibration and shake at 1,000-1,500 rpm is god dam awful. This sounds like a non issue as who drives at those rpm ?  well watch your rev counter when you pull away normally, as the cluth engages and the revs drop to you guessed it 1,000 rpm or a little over. This reminds me of pulling away is a diesel van

Drive in town and go round a very tight slow corner in traffic and the torque allows you to stay in second as you progress, guess what 1,500 rpm happens then too.

I have heard they settle down after a few hundred rpm. If not I'll buy a stock mount and have it refitted again, I can drive around the wheel hop, I cant drive around this.....

It gets worse the bottom subframe plate had to come off to fit and my geometry has moved. The handling is not what it was.......

I have checked the number of times I have had the geometry done since February. Once following fitment of PSS10, again when fitting 8x18's as not happy, then strung and corner weighted, again when fitted TT bottom arms, then tweaking twice at wheels in motion to get the car right (It WAS great, finally), then again yesterday to make sure the car is not scrubbing as I have fitted four new tyres.

Thats 7 times and I think it needs a full 4 wheel, then again if the bl***y engine mount gets swapped.

I am feeling very grumpy and wishing I had a car that handles well out of the box  :fighting:

PITA mate. Like you say give it a few miles to see if it loosens up a bit. Have you looked at the ECS type inserts for the OEM mounts? They are probably a little more compliant and less susceptible to NVH. Rhats the route i will be taking when i get around to it, because you dont need to remove the subframe.

Have you looked into getting a 2nd hand hunter rig?  :signLOL:

Is this the 'dogbone' mount that joins onto the gearbox?

Ive got a powerflex bush in mine. Made a good difference, though I still get a bit of wheel hop when I floor it  :signLOL:

The one on the right alex... (pic. by Robin) I presume the one you changed is the middle one?

THS bottom mount is known for being a little harsh.
Maybe THS side mounts and an OE lower mount (+/- insert) would be a good compromise for you?

If you can, Id probably try and persevere for a bit and drive the car hard to soften the mount a little......

The harmonics do change over a period (i found the aircon load put my car right into the vibration zone), but then I have a VWR lower mount not a THS one.

If you don't have the simple insert but the full ''bushing'' easiest way
to make it softer is to drill two hole in it. Sounds stupid, but will work.
It will still be stiffer than stock.

Bruce,

Thanks, what a clever idea  :happy2:

I'll see if I can find a picture of an original to see where the open sections are and potentially drill in the same location

It must be fairly similar to mine that you went out in?

That is strange, considering it is exactly the same mount. Mine do have about 3-4k on them now so it may be worth hanging in there for a while and see how it beds in and if there is any change. I should have said to you at the last meet that fitting of it requires wheel alignment being done..

I will hang on and see how it settles. At least I have the target settings for the alignment.

Unfortunately I am in Kent tomorrow afternoon so won't be able to make the meet up  :sad1:
never mind, hopefully I will be sorted with brakes, mount and geometry by then !

Okay, it will be drilled on the 18th, the same day I fit VWR front brakes.

It's still darn awful, maybe 10-15% better than when first fitted, but still dreadful.

I am highly likely to go back to stock and then look at inserts, any thoughts would be appreciated. Neuspeed, ECS or other ?

I have the THS Top Mounts and an ECS Insert in my lower mount.

The insert when fitted gave no more vibration into the cabin (on std Top Mounts)

I then fitted the THS Top Mounts and got a little bit of Grrrrr into the cabin, but not too much, certainly not intrusive.  The wife has never picked up on it, so it can't be too bad  :signLOL:

Tis on a Cupra though!!!   :rolleye:

I am thinking of fitting the stock mount back in place. The THS is bl**dy awful, improved but dreadful. I have come close to simply reverting to std and selling the car....

I will hopefully be happy with a new bottom mount and live with wheel hop. Any other suggestions before I swap back ?
