S3 hubs - help and advice needed please folks.
« on: June 01, 2011, 10:17:17 pm »
Hi folks. Bit of a plea for some help here. :ashamed:

I have a pair of S3 hubs I bought from TC.
Also supplied was a bag of 4x countersunk silver bolts and a single, considerably bigger black bolt.

The question is do I have enough bits to make them fit my Octavia (Mk5 GTI essentially) and R32 brakes or do I need further bolts and fittings.

I know some of you guys have done the conversion so hopefully you can advise.

Cheers, H.

The 4 countersinks hold the hub on and the larger bolt sounds like a hub bolt.

The hub bolt should be replaced each time it's removed and hence it's inclusion in the kit.  :happy2:

You defintitely need two (each side) longer bolts to secure the caliper (cos alloy is thicker)
and the 'wide head' nut to secure the steering ball joint. This one is absolutely necessary.
Using the old smaller nut is dangerous !!!

I'd recommend four new bolts to secure the wheel bearing and one for the strut as well.

Do also think of some brake hose protection if the brake line touch the alloy hub.

It'll just be the nut fitted to the ball joint H.  Some have a flatter base.

The S3 hub needs a different nut for the ball joint than the stock hub because
it has a steel insert pressed in the alloy. Using the the GTI nut is very dangerous.
The steel insert could loosen and you might have no steering then . . .

I don't know the english word for ''Bundmutter''.

I think I'm good Bruce. The S3 arms I have come with nut.

Ok - so 'collar nut' or 'flange nut'.  :happy2:

The stock GTI hub just uses a 'normal' nut for fixing the track rod end / tie rod end
which may not be used with the S3 alloy hub.

I'm telling this so insistently because I did this mistake on my self and I want to
prevent somebody else to have an accident. I fear there might be some guys out
there who have done the S3 mods as well and still have the old nuts.

I ended up changing the lot, S3 hubs, arms, ball joints and track rod ends all now from the S3, I still have a slight knock from the front drivers I think? but only now and again not all the time and its not on a full lock or bump type of thing it just does it then nothing???

I will be less than thrilled if my 5 week old car starts banging because of changing to S3 hubs and arms.  :sad1:

To be honest I still think its the junk drop links from FK that are knocking :scared: and nothing to do with the hubs or anything.
