at the local track from a low speed rolling start (about 30) my 2.0 TDI 140 was neck and neck with my mates standard Mk5 GTI DSG until triple figures, he started to pull after that, but we had to slow down as we had a corner coming up, lol

my 2.0 TDI was custom tuned by Torquetronix and put out 192HP and 322lbft (confirmed on a rolling road day)

This is one of those debates about what's best. It all depends what floats your boat. And what you need.

Until quite recently we had a Ed30 and a Gt Sport TDi 170 in the house. Both 07 manual, standard cars.

The Ed30 was a lot quicker through the gears and handled sweeter, less engine mass I suppose.
The GT Sport was pretty quick when wound right up and very frugal on juice.

In my book the GT diesel was a mode of transport, the GTi was a proper drivers car.
However you do pay the price for that in the mpg stakes. 30 odd versus 50 odd mpg is a big difference.

As we needed more space the diesel Golf has now grown into an A4 Avant, with the later 170 common rail TDi lump.
That feels a fair bit slower than the Gt Sport used to, but then it is the size of a small naval warship.
Can be hustled along though once it's wound up..great chassis.

But still glad I own an Ed30 Mk5..

TDI 140 just as fast as a GTI :signLOL:

Rubbish, I have both and there is no way in a million years its as fast, ANYWHERE!

And then you say its mapped so whats the point of coming on here and making statements like that.

While your changing gear in the Tdi because you have ran out of puff at 2000rpm the GTI is still going in the same gear.

Why am I even commenting on this? :stupid:

I now have a 2.0 TSI. I have and always will prefer the drive of a petrol car, just thought I would post my findings, if thats ok with you.

I guess the point is that you can have GTI performance in a Golf, for less money to both buy and run.

The diesel golf is in no respect faster than the GTi, it feels fast because of the shove you get with the low down torque, I have had people round to mine with Gti's and have been in mine and thought it was fast :stupid: but its only cos of the torque...

Has I said 1st and 2nd are pants once into 3rd it pulls better than a GTi but a GTi will be so far in front it wouldn't matter any way

And it the age old debate standard against modded, IMO just no comparison what the point?

By the way quite a few private tracks around isn't there

I drive a 300+bhp ko4'd car and have had TDI's in the past which i spent money on modifying so i have experience in both engines on how they perform. A mapped 140 will give a standard GTI a hard time. GTI's in standard form are not that fast. Yeah sure TDI's run out of steam at 4500 but they are geared differently to compensate. A TDI at 4500rpm say in 5th will be going at a faster speed than a GTI at 4500 rpm in 5th. To match the speed of a mapped 2.0 T the TDI would need a hybrid turbo. My old PD130 with a hybrid turbo had about the same performance as my vRS when it just had a stage 1 map on it, quite close..
