LED footwell bulbs.
« on: June 04, 2011, 01:30:29 pm »
Hey guys,

Has anyone on here changed their footwell lights to LED.

I have just tried to change them in my car assuming it would either be a festoon bulb or a 581 type, however it appears to be a sealed unit with a bulb inside.

If anyone has done this before or has a link to a similar thread then that would be great help.

Thanks!!

PJC

You can open the fitting by carefully bending the metal flaps out to separate the plastic piece from the metal. Then you can change the bulb and put it all back together  :happy2: 5 minute job, and I'm not at all technical

Fantastic, I was half tempted to having a go at doing that, but thought i would check first just in case.

What kind of bulbs are they? 581 fitment? Did you use canbus friendly bulbs?

I'm sure they're w5w 501's. I did use canbus friendly ones, not sure if they need to be used though.

Do all Mk5 GTI's have footwell lights? I don't recall ever seeing mine on. My car is 05-build, 06-spec.

there 501 bulbs guys and you need to use canbus friendly ones iirc.

And i think all Gti`s had them (my 55 reg did) , they can be turned on and off via VCDS or through the Highline comp if your car has it fitted   :happy2:

Robin,
We bought ours around the same time if you remember. Mine had them, I will check the price/standard/option price lists for 2005 for you if you want as i have most of them.

^^^^
Cheers, Geoff  :happy2: - I expect I've already got them but they're de-activated. I only have Midline but have a friend with VCDS and my VW dealer probably won't charge me to change the setting either.

Saw Dawaine's interior with LED's throughout at a meet the other evening and was mightily impressed. It's a much crisper and stylish light than the dirty yellow OEM lighting.

Robin,
Right just been and searched the collection of leaflets. You got me curious if i remembered incorrectly
Price lists dated from
01/05 Footwell lights listed under GT standard spec. The GTI spec is GT + whats listed under GTI.
05/05 Footwell lights listed under GT standard spec. The GTI spec is GT + whats listed under GTI.
08/05 Footwell lights listed under GT standard spec. The GTI spec is GT + whats listed under GTI.

So yours should have them.

As for the LED lighting. Im working on the outside first, then will be moving to the inside of mine.

P.S.
Robin, Byte 20 bit 0 footwell lights installed box should be ticked

Is this for the interior ones that come on when the doors open or are they separate bulbs?
