Common faults?
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:25:41 pm »
Hello, Im new to the Mk5 world after spending 6 happy years with the MK4 (1.8t & 1.8t Anniversary)

Having owned the 4 for as long as i did i came across pretty much all the common faults and problems associated with that model. Having fitting and repaired most of them myself i built up a very knowledge of the engine etc.
Which brings me to my questions....

What are the common fault and problems if any of the 5?
What should i be looking out for?

Thankyou in advance

Hi and welcome. I can only talk about my 05 GTi model, and problems only started occurring this year really, but boy have they come!! First needed both front wheel bearings changed, £412.00, then needed new steering rack, nigh on £900.00. Any other problems for me have really just been the expense of servicing, etc, including cambelt change, but from what i've learned over the past 6 years is that every GTi seems to be different, some have very few problems, some have many, and some have many all in one go!! Don't forget the rattles, but thats cars for you!!

o/

OEM diverter valve is probably the most common thing to go especially if it's an earlier rev, coils are also sometimes a common suspect, cam follower on non-AXX engine cars... can't think of anything else, those are probably the worst things and they're pretty straightforward to rectify, and there's a TSB out on the coils.

Only big failures I've had personally were the tiptronic selector (happened on a few US cars as well) and just recently my HPFP but neither are common I don't think. It's a pretty well built car IMO.

Enjoy!

Il props go with a forge 1 at some point anyway so in theory that shouldnt a problem. Ahhhh coils!! Mk4s down fall. They about 25 quid each on this model aswell?

TSB? And HPFP?

Whats the cam belt and water pump intervals on this car? Mines a 56 plate wi 45k on

Ref cambelt, i think every 40000 or 4 years, so i am assuming, depending on your annual mileage of course, that you won't need to worry about that for a while yet as it should have been changed recently!? Ref water pump, pass, sorry!! As for the coil packs, i recently had mine replaced under a 'recall', but your local VW dealer should be able to advise you if yours are under recall or ok to carry on with!! Do you not have a full VW history with this car?

TSB = technical service bulletin (basically a recall which is not officially a recall - work will be undertaken as part of normal servicing regime);
HPFP = High Pressure Fuel Pump

I've got the forge one on my car, I recommend it  :happy2:

I think the cam belt service differs depending on the age of the car. Mine was 40k, some I believe are 60k and 80k.

Common issues - in my opinion:

1) DV - Diverter valve/Recirculation valve - cheap fix.
2) Aircon compressor - made from toffee - expensive.
3) Cam follower and thus potentially damaging the camshaft - made of chocolate - expensive.
4) Coil packs - recall issued by VW - free.
5) Rust on a) the front wings at there apex, b) the bottom of the doors by the bottom of the front arch, c) around the boot badge - potentially covered by the 12 year bodywork warranty but expensive-ish if not.

I may be the wrong person to answer this as I've currently fallen out with my car, Christine as she is now called  .

So far my 05 has suffered the air-con compressor failure and has a non-sliding tilt and slide seat, apparently the seats are a 70p fix though!

DV seems to be a reoccuring 1 so its defo best i replace that before a remap. Thanks
Iv seen quite a few posts mentioning this cam follower. How would i check if its knackered? RUST? Now that is a shocker i wudnt have expected that.
I checked for warrenty work before i bought it n seat runners were a job so hopefully i shudnt have any problems with that 1.

Thanks guys. Keep it coming

My electric lumbar only adjusts one way - laterally. The other 2 buttons don't work. When you press the up and down buttons you can hear the motor whirring away but it doesn't do anything. I think the lumbar mat itself is supposed to be pulled up and down by something when you press the up/down buttons, summats obviously worn out. Just one of those things, they wear out due to the weight of the person sitting in the seats and VW not making the parts strong enough to last!
