Splash shield for rear brake discs
« on: June 12, 2011, 02:46:13 pm »
Good afternoon,

Had a loud crashing noise outside the car, I thought that the exhaust was crashing off the ground. Turns out it was the drivers side rear brake disc backing plate/splash shield that had corroded off its bolts and was pushing against the disc.

Kwik Fit have removed it - being a Sunday, TPS isn't open to get a replacement  :sad1: I'll probably order a new one next week, does anyone know the part number/rough cost for a new shield and the 3 bolts I assume it'll need?

Also, what are the dangers of leaving it for a few more weeks? I assume that braking in the wet might require a bit more pressure at first, as well as the risk of stone chips damaging the calipers.

The noise is horrendous isnt it.  Had the on a few ocasions but on my hands & knees push the plate back a bit & its ok.  Going to have the wheels off next week to do back brakes so will investigate

Do you get the noise when that wheel goes over a pothole or a bump?

Sounds very similar to the noise mine is making

Could hear it rubbing most of the time, but the crashing noise was over potholes and bumps yes. You can tell by trying to move the plate behind the discs at the back - for me, one was on tight, the other wobbling away

I would have ignored it for a bit, even with the embaressing sound but standing outside the car while it was moving, I could see the backing plate pressing on the disc :scared:

Why can't they just build something that lasts  :stupid:
