what difference can you feel with the trailing arm bushes?

I could sometimes feel some lateral movement in the rear, more pronounced in higher speed turns or direction changes.
The rear feels more planted now; helps with confidence feeling.
The car has 260k km, first time im changing them.

Took the front arch liners off today and cleared out some debris, amazing what accumulates in there and no surprise it rusts. Fortunately I found someone had already been there, removed the foam and had sprayed some wax. No rust so very happy and still on original wings. Also cleaned the wheels and sealed them ready for winter.

Fitted a silicon upper pcv hose from ECS to replace the plastic one that goes brittle and snaps.

Also fitted a boot tap for when I have time to feed the vacuum line through the bulkhead.

A few bits and bobs attacked today. 
A busted oil control ring in the VVT housing/chain cover   



I think the rings break when sliding the chain cover back on not quite square and they catch in the VVT phaser's wear grooves.

I can't see them just randomly snapping for no reason during normal use, but I have another theory to put on the dinner table. 

Either way, a new VVT phaser, chain, tensioner and cover were fitted and the noise is gone, finally! 

Right, with no grooves in the adjuster...the rings shouldn't catch when the cover is mounted. I thought it possible that perhaps this is from when the rings are initially mounted. Getting them on isn't an easy task and maybe, if a one is stressed or tension slightly damages a ring in that process, it comes apart later on after some amount of use. I've seen people post breaking one or more of the rings in just trying to install them. So stress, or tension cracks, could happen in a factory with someone having trouble getting the rings into place.

But, a very nice post...showing there's more to it than just doing the chain and tensioner.

Indeed.  That problem doesn't happen with a brand new VVT phaser.  I was just highlighting a potential risk of a plastic ring catching in one of said grooves (in a worn out phaser) upon reassembly, especially if the chain cover isn't slid home dead square.

The rings come pre-fitted to a new chain cover from VW.  I guess they slide them down a calibrated sleeve to avoid snapping them as you described.  I've fitted them before and you have to very carefully 'walk' them over the raised channels, but they are indeed extremely fragile.  That is a good point though.  If they are stressed during fitment, a lot of heat and oil pressure could potentially fracture them.

After a grawnchy sound from the rear brakes, an inspection meant time for new discs and pads.








No grooves or drilled holes this time, just smooth brembo discs but i've gone with EBC red pads again.
It got dark as i finished the drivers side so will do the other tomorrow (didn't take too long just started late)


Ordered a replacement wing from Lothianautoparts that arrived yesterday and will hopefully fit that tomorrow as well.

Tried out VCDS for the first time today too, just an auto scan to begin with, nothing majorly worrying or anything engine related which is good.

Managed to do the other side of the rear discs and pads, all went fine.

Also fitted the lothianautoparts passenger wing.

As you can see it has been needed for some time.



Once it was off a massive flake peeled off and revealed an entire hole!

Nice and shiny, it came packaged surpassingly well



No rust elsewhere luckily.



And here we have it fitted, I've read on here that for some people the fitment and the colour match weren't exact.
Id say the fitment is 99% there with the only thing being between the bumper and wing by the bottom of the headlight. Although, the rest of the wing was down to me fitting it properly, its very easy to tighten a bolt with it out slightly but easy enough to correct.

The colour match is very good, but in different lighting it may become more obvious that its not as good as a shop matching and fading it in.



Either way for 95 quid, it certainly looks better than the rusty embarrassment that was there before it.

Other side is bubbling slightly but not as obvious as the passenger side, will be getting the other side at some point.

Changed front pads and discs today , pads still had some life in them but the discs had a decent lip and been advised on the last couple of mots so got it done, checked the diverter valve as well all looked good no splits was a little oily though. Was going to take some pics but was covered in grime and brake dust so didn’t bother.

Changed the gear shift linkage to an adjustable short shift, swapped out the rear springs for Mk6 slightly lowered rears and the rear shocks replaced with Drexler G-Force as I wanted a basic Gas shock. I've fitted B8s, coilovers, H&R springs, Eibach combinations over the years and have felt let down the ride being too harsh or firm for me.
Also built up Drexler G-Force Front Shocks with Mk6 lowering springs and new top mounts with cleaned and regreased bearings.
Hopefully will fit over the weekend.

Changed passenger side wishbone bushes for PSB poly ones, with the anti roll bar bushes and others to be swapped out.

Replaced offside front shock with Mk6 Spring and Drexer G-Force Shock, hopefully fit the drivers side tomorrow.
