Fitted the dogbone 1K0199855BJ revision without the void in the rubber.

Now running this with 034 lower and upper inserts for the lower engine bush. New lemforder engine mounts with powerflex polybush inserts.

That is a much better mount. I fitted one of those to mine and it removes a fair amount of slop without increasing NVH. It only took VW 16 years to finally ditch the voids

Yeah made a quite a difference to mine, engine doesn't feel like a pendulum swinging back and forth in low gears. Which was all coming from this bush as I had bought and fitted new mounts and filled the voids on them with various different inserts already, with no vibration at all.

The old bush was completely shot anyway as I could move it easily with my hands but changing this got rid of a nasty clunk also when driving in first or changing down to first when approaching a stop.

Replaced the front suspension ball joints.

I replaced the rest of the suspension on the car a couple of months ago but didn't do the ball joints, so it was on my todo list.

Can't say it makes a world of difference, but glad to have done it anyway. Wasn't too difficult, but I did have to take the CV axles out to be able to get a socket on the top nut, and the one side demanded a pretty heaving beating with a ball joint splitter and a 4lb lump hammer, but got there in the end.

The parts are Lemforder, which I think are OEM:

Lemforder Ball Joint 26772 02 (Left)   [£25.90] (AutoDoc)
Lemforder Ball Joint 26773 02 (Right) [£25.90] (AutoDoc)

Got my steering wheel reupholstered. Planned to do perforated sides / smooth top bottom like OEM but walked away with alcantara. Loving it so far :)

Decided to take the plunge and update the wiper arms on my GTI. They were the early spindle type arms and the blades always seem to be more expensive, than the newer slide in type of the Mk6 and late Mk5.

Bought some Mk6 arms cheap (£13 for a pair) sanded down, light coat of etch primer and then satin black paint to restore them. New Bosch blades for under £14 from Halfords and fitted them all.

Simple mod 👌 It all came to the same cost as a set of the old style blades on their own 😕

New on the left, old on the right

Cambelt and water pump changed last night / this morning. Luckily I had ordered all the required bolts…one of the bottom pulley bolts rounded off when removing. Luckily the head drilled off and rest of the bolt extracted ok. I had a small leak from the water pump so wanted to get it sorted before it progressed. It had a gates kit on it from the previous owner so I replaced with a full genuine kit. Not too bad of a job even with the earlier single piece belt cover and bolt issue!

A quick (well 1.5 hours) and unsatisfactory headlight resto today.  I used the Turtle Wax kit and I think I need something a bit more aggressive.  I'll have another go at it soon and use drill attachement sanding pads to really try and get the scratches off.

Finally installed a gas strut to replace the cheap bonnet bar that Skoda cursed our cars with. AliExpress special but does the job. Now I can be like you MK5 lads
