Got my car back from the garage after getting the cam chain and tensioner replaced. I can't believe how much quieter the car is! Back to loving my car again  :driver:

How much?

Did you just get it changed because the noise was annoying you?

Labour came to just under £180 including a flange that he found was split. I sourced the parts myself for around £100, used Febi Bilstein for the chain and tensioner as genuine was much more expensive (the Febi stuff had some good reviews) and genuine for the all the seals and bolts.

Not exactly.

My oil pressure light came on during a hard drive. I then dropped the sump and my pickup pipe had small pieces of hard plastic in it (tensioner breaking up). I didn't want to risk changing it myself so got my local VW specialist to do the chain and tensioner.

Having had it replaced I think a tell tale sign it needs replacing is when its drastically noiser when hot compared to cold. Now it's been replaced it's the same noise hot and cold.  :happy2:

And any links to these Febi Bilstein parts? I've noticed my engine being loud when hot. Going to change the cam follower first as it's been 20k miles. If it doesn't quieten down, I'm going to start preparing for a tensioner and chain change.

My cheap RCN210 stereo had served me well but after my tax refund I decided to upgrade myself.

So went from this...

To this, the RCD330G Plus which just been fitted today.

I probably give an indepth review of the system after using it for a week or so.

Were these replaced as well? If oil pressure problem returns...look into the condition of these inside the cam-tensioner cover. https://www.ecstuning.com/ES2726697/?gclid=CjwKEAjw5pKtBRCqpfPK5qXatWYSJABi5kTxAEu3Fro_PDcaoBk1JN-5rCM1m1FuG671w5eFAzatuRoCb3Pw_wcB

They are known to fall apart and create noise and pressure issues. They are somewhat rigid and possibly why they do eventually come apart. I feel worth renewing any time, and for any reason, the cam adjuster cover must be removed.

That is really nice how much did it cost and what does it have?  Bluetooth iPod dab ?

There are two versions of the RCD 330G and they all use the Quadlock interface so is a straight swap on the MK5 Golf's. The standard version comes with a 5.0" touchscreen, refreshed MIB Interface of the newer MK7 Golfs, CD Player, FM/AM Radio (No DAB I'm afraid), AUX, SD Card Reader, USB/iPod connectivity, MirrorLink, OPS and Reverse Camera Support* (with 3rd party camera module), built in Bluetooth (telephony and A2DP audio streaming) and Microphone in one unit. You can get these units for about £90-£120 on AliExpress depending on exchange rates.

The RCD 330G Plus shares the same features as above but omits the CD Player in place of a larger screen (6.5") which in my opinion is very sharp and easy on the eyes, plus it makes it a bit easier to tap the menus on the screen too! The RCD 330G Plus costed me £180 all in including delivery from a seller on AliExpress. Shipping was very quick, literally took just 3 days from their base in China straight to the dashboard of my GTI!  :happy2:

There's no Sat Nav on these but I haven't had the chance to try out the Mirrorlink function as my current phone don't support this feature. Basically it copies the interface of your smartphone straight to the stereo screen so theoretically you can run various apps like navigation and car telemetry data on it which can be pretty cool if you can get it working.

any issues with fitting this to an older car in terms of canbus and bat drain? they are new 2016 headunits AFAIK are they?

They are the new 2016 units so most likely you will need a new Canbus Gateway (ideally a 7K0 907 530) to avoid battery drain. I'm running an updated 7K0 907 530AM gateway on my 2005 GTI and they're not expensive to get these days. There have been reports of the MK5 multifunction steering wheel controls not working on the basic RCN 210 stereo it's probably be true on the higher RCD 330G units too where you need the updated CH steering module to solve the problem (I don't have a MFSW so can't confirm this as yet).

Still I only had it for a day but I will keep you guys posted on the experiences and quirks to see if it's a worthy OEM alternative to the RCD 510 and others.

No I didn't, I used a parts list on the guide that's on here but I would have if I would have known before... Saying that it seems perfect and I'm pretty sure the oil pressure light came on only due to a large piece of the tensioner temporarily blocking the strainer on the pick up pipe. I'm going on a 250 mile journey at the weekend, that should be a good test for whether everything is okay.
