Decided to clean and then fill the bush voids of the gear shift cable ends with JB weld, as an alternative to fitting expensive alloy bushes to improve the shifting experience as there was a lot of extra movement/twisting from the original bush.

All went as planned and a cheap upgrade in my eyes.

All fitted up and working perfectly as intended




Also changed the three seals on the vacuum pump and cleaned it up.

Installed the carplay / android auto capable usb/aux box with the wiring.

Changed the flywheel. Old PN was discontinued, new PN you can only find OEM for 1100 euros... Insane. Fitted a Sachs one, used on diesels with dq250 dsg. Works great and only costs ~300 euros. Sachs part number 2295 000 541.

That pilot bearing is a massive PITA to take out without the proper VAG extractor tool. We chiselled away at it till it came out in little pieces, wasted an hour on that crap and it's a 30sec job with the tool. All the youtube guides with bread / grease are useless.

No idea how many kms on it, car had ~270k when I got it 2 years ago with 4 previous owners. It has ~309k now.

It rattled one time in N during standstill and was pretty rough / jerky when coming to a standstill after a while driving thru bad city traffic. The shift from 2nd to 1st was pretty crap, dropping revs to ~600, felt like a beginner driving a manual transmission and almost stalling the engine.

It was definitely livable with as I don't really drive that much during rush hour but changed it for peace of mind. Drove all day and it felt smooth as silk.

This flywheel is used on the 2.0 tdi's.

    2.0 TDI, 10.2003 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 136 CP
    2.0 TDI, 12.2004 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 140 CP
    2.0 TDI, 11.2005 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 170 CP
    2.0 TDI 16V, 10.2003 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 140 CP
    2.0 TDI 16V 4motion, 08.2004 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 140 CP
    2.0 TDI 4motion, 01.2007 - 11.2008, 1968 ccm, 140 CP

I've heard US guys using the regular GTI / 2.0 tfsi 200hp one. That one was more expensive by about 100 euros. It was my tuner that suggested that I get this diesel one, they use it on all their dq250 cars when it's time to change apparently.

Wheels arrived yesterday so I've fitted them and painted the inscriptions on them. Tires are Vredestein Ultrac Vorti+ 225/40/R18 and the rims themselves are TEC Speedwheels GT Evo 18x8 ET45. The front sits perfectly flush but the rear needs a 5mm spacer. I chose not to get different sizes so I can swap the fronts with the rears when needed.

I honestly cant decide whether I like it with or without the painted inscriptions..

Recently been getting a rattling noise when the engine is hot at idle. The noise appeared to be coming from the cam chain area, but that was done a few years ago.

Well I decided to check it and took the cam case etc off to inspect. The tensioner and chain all looked fine, but then noticed one of the cam oil rings was broken.

Replaced just the one as the other two were fine and put it all back together with new elring seals.......back to a healthy sounding TFSI again.

102k, MOT pass with no advisories  :congrats:

Also had the following done
  • Minor Service
  • Fuel filter - looks like it had never been changed from the history
  • Pollen Filter
  • Rear pads
  • New coolant expansion tank - integral sensors were giving dash errors over winter

Now the odd part..I had asked for a brake fluid change, but apparently the bleed nipple on the rear discs were seized, and they can easily break which would mean new calipers, so they were not keen to progress. I said, ok leave it for now, I will look into that.
So, my Qs are
  • Doesn't having rear pads changed require a bleed?
  • Are they correct on the possible/probable bleed nipples breaking and needing new calipers if so?
  • Is there a way to free them up?
  • How much approx. are new rear calipers fitted?

My replies are:

1. Not necessarily
2. Kind of, they could be drilled out but the labour cost would possible make recon calipers more cost effective.
3. You could try soaking around them with something like Plusgas for a few days to see if that would help.
4. Sorry don't know but ECP show the calipers at around the £140 mark each.

HTH
