Steve, did your man not use a paint gauge before he started sanding?

Exactly what I was going to say.......

No mate, he hasnt got one... as he does this in his spare time as a hobby for the past 20 years, this is the 1st time ever that hes come across a car with such thin paintwork, i know ive read about it, but the last thing we were both expecting after filling a boot stratch and giving 2500 wet n dry on a cork block with around a dozen wipes, was Pink showing almost imeadiatley!!

A valueable lession to us both, fortunatley we got it sorted..

it either that or my cars had a rear end shunt in the first 11 months of its life before i bought it??? it seems rather odd the panels are as such

but either way she's in the best condition shes been in since ive had her in 4 years.. and for the cost of a packet of Jaffa cakes, was a worthwhile gamble

If it had, had a bump then chances are there'd be more paint not less so I wouldn't worry about that bud!

I managed to get a close look at Steve's car yesterday as the work was being carried out , as Steve was introducing me to his detailing man to take a look at my car.
The finish is incredible with no stone chips visible at all. It look's stunning , better than new  :notworthy:

I'll also be paying detailing Dave a visit in a few weeks for a full machine polish  , I cant wait

Thanks again Steve... :happy2:

+1. Vital IMO. If you look at the likes of KDS, they use a laser pointer to help accurately measure the same spot after sanding.

Does look good though. I thought the bumper being a different colour was because it was plastic and not metal?

The GTI isn't just a machine. It's very much a living, breathing thing.

jas, Its just the photo lol, the bumper was not sanded, only to the right of the vw boot badge , pics were taken at dusk, so light was darker than usual mate  :happy2:... When she's had some polish and wax re-applied and it stops snowing,I will take another snap  :happy2:

I did read about people saying about different paint thickness's but the boot on my car is wafer thin, if all mk5's are like this, then you can't do any stratch repairs, because there is zero paint depth!..Bonnet and wings were no issue thankfully, but David had huge amounts of paint fillings to wet flat back. It was worth a go, if it didn't work then my plan of a full respray would of gone ahead, but adding fresh paint will not give as good as end result.Softer paint quite often can be worse as you know..

Problem is now, the bonnet and wings have no Orange peel effect, and the rest of the car does :signLOL:

Steve I'm aware of that. My reply was in part response to flora's post. If you spray the same paint on metal and plastic there will always be a subtle difference in the final colour.

Me and my mk5 drove down to JKM this morning, dropped my car off and I am currently driving around in this little one:
