Nocking on idle - definately not clutch !!
« on: June 20, 2011, 12:08:43 pm »
I think I already know the answer to this but thought I'd ask anyway!

I got in my car (Leon Cupra) yesterday morning and when I started her up there was a rather loud knocking sound coming from under the dash whilst the car was idling. Once I was on the move it went away! I stopped at set of traffic lights and the noise came back. I blipped the throttle and the noise went away. As soon as it settled back to idle it came back!

I've also noticed that if I'm driving along and I put the clutch in the noise appears but is quiet faint! Am I right in thinking that this could be the clutch? Anyone else had a similar experience?

Possibly be clutch release or thrust bearing.

I would take it and get it checked out.

Cheers for that mate!

I've been trying to find the source of the noise today and I'm thinking it might not actually be the clutch! When I depress the clutch the noise is still there! It seems to be coming from under the center console under the gearstick area! This is leading me to believe it's a knocking/rubbing noise! I've looked but can't find anything! I'm going to jack it up and have a poper look around tomorrow. If I can't find anything it's going back into seat!

right, well in the last couple of hours it seems to have gotten slightly louder !!

on idle there is a loud tapping noise coming from under the dash area (under the car exhaust tunnel/back of engine area). it doesnt sound like a metal on metal noise as its not a tinny high pitch noise more of a dull plastic on plastic noise !!

anyone any ideas or suggestions ??

I've got a similar issue to the one you've described, thank god its something simple. Does anyone know where the fuel line runs? Am I right in thinking its along the offside?

iv got exactly the same problem, when idle my car is only running on 3 cylinders (golf tdi), but when any revs are applied it goes back to normal. its a loud and fast tapping noise. an AA guy told me it could be sticking valves so i flushed the oil out and changed it but the noise came back after about 5 minutes of driving. anybody have any ideas what it could be?
