Rust front wing wheel arch
« on: June 13, 2011, 01:11:29 pm »
Hi,

From what I have read this seems to be a common issue with the MK5 golf and on the 6 GTi's that I have viewed all of them had some form of rust or bubbling. How much would this cost to repair as it's a struugle finding a GTI without this issue. Just so I can factor this into the negotiations.

Thanks

can try and get it fixed for free from VW,
not all of them have it but should be sorted under the 11 year corrosion warranty,

From what I have read i'm pretty sure this issue should be covered by warranty. A FVWSH will probably help the claim though.

Not had this issue on my 2007 56 plate (touching wood) but maybe someone who has some experience will be able to confirm.

Cheers. Will bear that in mind when looking. It appears, to me, that the water gets in between the plastic and metal wheel arch and obviuosly sits there and has all the time in the world to eat away at the metal. No stone chips in the paintwork etc.

Seen a GTI near me, http://www.beechlawnmotors.co.uk/carpopup.php?id=1094

Good mileage for 2005 and a decent enough price. There is the bubbling under the arches but hopefully, in theory VW should rectify that. Does anyone knw what's entailed in that. It's just I don't want them simply sanding it down and repainting. Would like to know that it will last and is somewhat preventative.

Thanks

....Labour £207, paint £117, is what my bodyshop has quoted for both wings. That includes top notch prep and prime and paint curing etc. I know and trust their work. Hope it gives you a clue of price.

I believe the metal round the arch is quite thin. It wouldn't take much for the rust to go right through. Are you sure there wouldn't be need for some welding?

....The whole procedure was explained to me but I can't remember the detail, sorry. Yes, more than just painting is involved.

Reading through this thread and the MK5 rust issues.Should the wings not be replaced under warranty??
I`m just about to fall out with VW again with rust bubbling away on the front wings at the top of the wheel arch.
I`ll let you know what they say!!!
Being their usual helpful selves I`m sure the second word will be off!!!

Too Hot - I was informed by VW that they used to replace the wings on the cars in the past. They now repair them as RR descibed. I can only assume it was costing them too much money to continue to replace due to the fact that the majority of mk5's have this issue.

So don't expect new wings mate.

And take a look under the adhesive 'GTI' kickplates in the door shuts. Peel those back & you may find more rust. They go there too, but it's not usually found until its well on the way.

@LouCyffer Where exactly are the "adhesive 'GTI' kickplates in the door shuts"? I don't want to look but now there's the curiosity. GULP!
