I have recent copy of MBR magazine that tested bikes upto £600 - the Specialised Hardrock Pro & Kona Nunu cNet out very well.  Upto £800 the KHS Alite 2000 & Cube LtD Comp were best. The KHS in particular came out extremely well.

Nice looking bike.

Forks look like rock shox recon which are much nicer than toras. Make sure you get the pressure right and if I'm correct the rebound adjustment will be on the bottom of the fork with lockout at the top.  I cannot stress enought have much different fork adjustment can make to the feel of the bike!

Been toying with the idea of building a bike over time maybe picking up a nice frame and just build it over time

Mods yes but way too many to stick in this little box

Sorry to jump in but I've been looking at bikes recently too. Was wanting to spend no more than about £400 for the amount I'll use it. Will be using it around where I live (in the countryside, nothing too extreme).

Which of these would be best......

Try picking up a 2010 of either of those & you should save a bit more on the list price. I'd pick the spesh myself.

My missus actual got a Kona Nunu when I bough mine. She wasnt too sure what she wanted aswell so she just asked the sales bloke and he recommended the Nunu. And for the £500 she paid for it, it's a great bike! Obviously not as good as mine though! :D
